Jury selection in a trial of the man accused in a deputy sheriff’s injuries last year is set to begin Monday in Warren County Circuit Court.
Ronald Vaughn, 25, is accused in injuries that Deputy Mike Hollingsworth of the Warren County Sheriff’s Department sustained when he was struck by a car while directing traffic for a funeral on U.S. 80 on Feb. 9, 2004.
Vaughn is charged with aggravated driving under the influence of a controlled substance.
He is to be represented by Vicksburg attorney Eugene Perrier.
The trial was delayed by a suspension by the Mississippi Supreme Court of the attorney Vaughn chose to represent him, Chokwe Lumumba of Jackson. Perrier was appointed to represent Vaughn earlier this fall by Judge Isadore Patrick, who is handling the case.
Hollingsworth suffered head trauma and spent two weeks in a coma and six weeks in a Jackson hospital recovering from his injuries. He has since returned to duty at the sheriff’s department.
The charge against Vaughn carries a maximum prison sentence of 25 years.
Vaughn was arrested after Hollingsworth was struck and has remained jailed since. He requested bond but was denied.
