Albert J. Antoine
Albert J. Antoine died early Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at his home. He was 81.
A native and lifelong resident of Vicksburg, he was the son of the late Charles and Mathilda Schichtle Antoine.
Mr. Antoine attended St. Aloysius College and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, serving on the USS LST158 and LST351, where he earned the Purple Heart in July 1943 at the age of 19. Mr. Antoine saw action in North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio and Normandy and also served in the Korean Conflict. He was discharged from the Navy in 1954 as Hospital Corpsman First Class USN and retired from the U.S. Army Reserve in September 1984 as Chief Warrant Officer (W-4).
Mr. Antoine was a life member of the Reserves Officers Association, American Legion and served as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus in Vicksburg, and a member of St. Michael Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Frances T. Antoine of Vicksburg; a son, Charles A. Antoine of Vicksburg; two daughters, Linda A. West of Raymond and Barbara J. Antoine of Vicksburg; a sister, Marie Davis of Delta, La.; eight grandchildren, Terry O. Antoine, Tommy M. Antoine, Don Rowland, Kristi V. Liggett, Jake Kilburn, Matt Kilburn and Lee Ann Kilburn, all of Vicksburg, and Tracy L. Harner of Charleston, Tenn.; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael Catholic Church with Father P.J. Curley officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park with military honors.
Visitation will be from 6 until 8 tonight at Fisher Funeral Home, followed by a Rosary service at 8. Visitation will also be at the church from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the hour of service.
Mr. Antoine’s grandchildren will be pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Gerache, Sam Lusco, Joe Loviza, Joe Bottino, Dr. Walter E. Johnston Jr., Dr. Abdul Bahro and members of the Knights of Columbus.
Memorials may be made to St. Michael Catholic Church, 100 St. Michael Place, Vicksburg, MS 39180; to Vicksburg Catholic Schools, 1900 Grove St., Vicksburg, MS 39183; or to a favorite charity.
Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home has charge of all arrangements.
Hazel Hood Guthrie
Hazel Hood Guthrie died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2005, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. She was 86.
Mrs. Guthrie was born in Shaw. She was a Vicksburg resident for 55 years and, for the past 16 years, had lived in Jackson. She was a homemaker and member of Highland Baptist Church in Jackson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Guthrie, and a granddaughter, Lillian Hardin.
Survivors include three sons, Bill Guthrie of Mountain View, Ark., Edward Guthrie of Jackson and Edwin Guthrie of Gulfport; two daughters, Laverne Bryant of Clinton and Louise Hardin of Florence; two brothers, Jessie “Jake” Hood of Ridgeland and Bennie Hood of Cleveland; and 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Cliff Shipp officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from noon Wednesday until the service at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Bryant, Randy Hardin, Chris Guthrie, Thomas Guthrie, Jeremy Keen and Walt McJordan.
