A yellow card-filled evening at Memorial Stadium ended in a fitting manner – a penalty kick.
Bill Zaremba beat Vicksburg goalie Jay Griffing on the penalty shot after Zaremba was taken down inside the goal box for a 2-1 Florence win.
The game featured six yellow cards and one soft red – when a player gets two yellow cards – which almost equalled the total number of shots taken.
“I thought in the first half we played well enough to keep it close,” said Vicksburg coach Jason Bennett, whose team fell to 4-2 on the season. “In the second half, we picked it up, got a goal and some good shots. But then we slipped back into the way we were playing at the beginning of last year and our composure got a little off.”
Five minutes into the second half, Jay Hall tied the game at 1 with a rocket shot from about 20 yards away. Michael Cooper had the assist and both teams played scoreless soccer for the next 12 minutes. Zaremba then was taken down to set up the game-winner.
“We have to learn to play through that,” Bennett said. “We’ve been doing a good job this year of keeping our composure, but tonight we didn’t.”
Vicksburg had a golden chance soon after the penalty kick when Cooper saved the ball from going out of bounds deep in Florence territory. He then intercepted a pass, drove toward the goal, but had his shot blocked when he had to change from his left foot to his right.
It was the last best chance for the Gators, who were outshot 6-5.
(G) Vicksburg 3, Florence 2
Diari Gilliam scored two goals, including the game-winner with 33 minutes to play in the second half, to propel Vicksburg (5-2) past Florence (1-4).
Florence held a 2-1 lead at halftime, but were kept out of the net in the second half.
Gilliam started the scoring with a first-half goal, then Holly Head scored on an assist from Crystal Davidson midway through the second half to tie the game at 2.
Gilliam’s second goal – both were assisted by Becky Wilson – gave the Missy Gators the lead for good.
Candace Duke scored both goals for Florence.
(G) St Aloysius 6, McComb 1
The usual suspects lifted St. Aloysius to a victory over McComb on Tuesday.
High-scoring Andrea Harrison tallied a hat-trick and Haley Davis, the team’s second-leading scorer, added a pair of goals in the victory. Rebecca Sigh scored a goal for the Lady Flashes.
Harrison, Davis, Krista McCollum, Ashley Magee and Ryan Martin each had assists in the victory.
(B) St. Al 5, McComb 0
The Flashes improved to 8-2 on the season with a blowout victory at McComb.
Bray Jones and Stephen Mazzanti each scored first-half goals as the Flashes took a 2-0 halftime lead.
The Flashes pulled away in the second half after Mazzanti scored his second goal, and Adam Fulcher and Chris Guizerix each scored a goal.
The Flashes stay on the road this week, traveling to Forest Hill on Friday night.
