A pair of second half adjustments keyed Callaway’s run to the Warren Central Classic championship Friday night.
The Lady Chargers (7-2) held high-scoring WC freshman Sha’Kayla Caples to two points in the second half and Kiana James shook off an injured ankle for a 52-45 victory. Callaway won the boys championship.
“We were reluctant to put her in because she had a high ankle sprain,” Callaway coach Maxine Johnson said. “At halftime, she said, ‘coach, I want to play.’ We put her in and she was not going to allow them to lob the ball in to (Caples).”
Caples scored 15 first-half points and grabbed nine rebounds in the opening half as the Lady Vikes built a 24-19 lead at the break.
In the second half, though, Callaway sagged into a 2-3 zone and collapsed the defense on Caples and forced WC into shooting from the outside.
“They fronted me and it was hard to get the ball,” said Caples, one of two freshmen starting for the young Lady Vikes.
Amanda Doyle scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the victory, but it was one the Lady Vikes (6-2) could have easily won.
WC held a 37-32 lead going into the fourth quarter. It was short-lived, however, as Jessica Collins nailed a 3-pointer with 6 minutes, 21 seconds to play to give Callaway a 41-39 lead, their first since early in the second quarter.
Over the next four-plus minutes, the Lady Chargers increased the advantage to as many as seven points and the Lady Vikes could not mount a charge.
“We didn’t step up and make the outside shots and we couldn’t get the ball down low to Caples,” WC coach Donny Fuller said. “This year, when they have packed it in like that, we’ve made shots. We’ve shot the ball extremely well this year against teams that pack it in. Tonight, though, we didn’t.”
Lyranda Jones scored 14 points to go along with James’ 15 and Collins’ 13.
The loss dropped the surprising Lady Vikes to 6-2. WC lost its top six scorers from last year’s Class 5A state semifinal team, and only Brittany Willis and Doyle had substantial playing time. Doyle is the lone senior.
“We have to learn from games like this,” Fuller said. “And that is one thing I think about this team is that they will learn. We are a very young team.”
(B) WC 59, Vicksburg 46
In the boys’ consolation game of the tournament, Andre Thomas scored 15 points and Andy Anderton netted 11 as the Vikings defeated their archrival.
Anderton scored nine points in the second half and put an exclamation point on the victory with a slam dunk as time expired.
Shaun Walker added 10 points in the victory.
Tony Ammons led Vicksburg (7-3) with 14 points. The Vikings (4-4) led throughout the contest and pulled away with an impressive fourth quarter that saw WC outscore Vicksburg 23-13.
The two teams will meet again next Saturday in their first Division 3-5A matchup of the season.
(G) Jim Hill 54, Vicksburg 48
Adrian Weston scored 16 points to lead Jim Hill (4-5) to a victory in the consolation game of the tournament.
Kristin Ellis led Vicksburg with 15 points and Taylor Ammons scored 10. The Missy Gators (5-4) could not hold a lead, however, losing a five-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
