Sydney Johnson Butler
Sydney Johnson Butler, age 89, of Memphis, formerly of Vicksburg, died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005.
Services for Mrs. Butler will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home in Memphis on Monday, Dec. 12, 2005, at 2 p.m. in the north chapel with visitation beginning at 1 p.m.
Mrs. Butler was a member of Second Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the Gillespie Bible class and the Deborah Circle. She was awarded the Honorary Life Membership for her dedication to the church. She was a member of the Le Bonheur Club, Les Passes and the Antiquarians study group.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Landon V. Butler.
Survivors include a daughter, Blanche Butler Montessori of Memphis; two sons, Landon V. Butler and Sydney J. Butler, both of Washington, D.C.; ten grandchildren; and one great grandson.
Memorials may be sent to Second Presbyterian Church in Memphis or the charity of the donor’s choice.
Ruth Louise McAlexander Crawley
Ruth Louise McAlexander Crawley died in Vicksburg on Dec. 7, 2005. Ruth was born in Holly Springs, Miss., on Jan. 15, 1915. A 1933 graduate of Holly Springs High School, she married Henry Fant “Pep” Crawley and worked alongside him in Crawley’s Grocery & Market and later in the P&J and Crawley’s Hardware and Variety Stores. She worked for many years in the Bank of Holly Springs. She and her family were longtime members of First Baptist church in Holly Springs. Shortly after Pep’s death in 1994, Ruth moved to Cleveland, Tenn., and later to Vicksburg.
She is survived by her family, Kathy Crawley, Jackie and Buddy Arnold, and Melissa and Alvin Word; seven grandchildren, Allison Riola, Jay Riola, Todd Arnold, Jill Crawley Arnold, Alvin Word IV, Brian Word and Amanda Word; and one great-grandchild, Naima Riola.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today at Holly Springs Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today at Hillcrest Cemetery in Holly Springs.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to Audubon Mississippi (“Mack Project”), Strawberry Plains Audubon Center, 285 Plains Road, Holly Springs, MS 38635 or to the First Baptist Church, 1607 Cherry St., Vicksburg, MS 39180.
Eddie Hooper Jr.
Services for Eddie Hooper Jr. will be Sunday, Dec. 11, at 2:30 p.m. at Mount Pilgrim Mennonite Baptist Church with the Rev. Glenn Hemphill presiding. Visitation will be today from 2 until 5 p.m. at Williams Funeral Service Chapel.
Mr. Hooper died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. He was 86.
Mr. Hooper retired as a custodian from Batesville Casket Co. He served in the Army as a sanitary technician in World War II, receiving the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and a Bronze Star.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Alphone Hooper and Joe Hooper; and a sister, Bertha Hooper.
Survivors include a sister, Catherine Hooper-Smith of Vicksburg; a brother, Alfred Hooper of Detroit; and nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives, including members of the Gaines, Fountain, Jefferson and Hooper families of Vicksburg.
