RAYMOND – Unbeaten no more.

The Hinds AHS Lady War Dawgs fell from the list of unbeaten prep basketball teams Thursday afternoon after being outshot and outplayed by the Vicksburg Missy Gators.

VHS (7-7) forced 26 turnovers and held Hinds AHS to just 4 of 18 shooting in the fourth quarter to claim a 61-52 win at the Raymond High Ranger Roundup.

The Missy Gators will play either Morton or Raymond today at 5 p.m. for the tournament championship. Hinds AHS (16-1) will play in the consolation game at 2 p.m.

Hinds AHS coach Bruce Baker credited the Missy Gators ability to turn the tables on his Lady War Dawgs.

&#8220We’re usually the ones who make you turn over the ball, but it didn’t work this time,” Baker said. &#8220I guess we don’t want to be pressed. Vicksburg stayed aggressive and stepped up while we weren’t as aggressive as we were when we played them at home.”

For first-year Vicksburg coach Barbara Hartzog, beating Hinds marked one of the best wins of the season.

&#8220Of course it’s a great win, but any win at this point is big for us,” Hartzog said. &#8220This will help our confidence, but now we have to come back tomorrow and do it again.”

When the two teams met earlier this month, Hinds used a tough press to whip VHS by 13 points.

&#8220We handled their press a lot better this time,” Hartzog said. &#8220We were more patient. But there are some things we still need to work on. We need to stay focused for the whole ballgame.”

Vicksburg got a big effort from 6-foot center Taylor Ammons with 18 points. Kristin Ellis had 14 while four others had at least five points.

Tied at 18, Ammons keyed a 7-2 run in the second quarter that put VHS up to stay at 25-20. It was 27-24 at the half.

The Missy Gators held their three-point lead to start the fourth quarter at 41-38.

A minute into the quarter, Ellis had a basket waved off because of a charging foul. That got Hartzog up arguing while at the same time sending a charge into the Missy Gators.

Ellis came back, scoring easily off the dribble. Ammons then battled for a pair of rebounds, starting fast breaks which were converted into layups by Ellis and Kendra Sims for a 49-41 lead.

Taylor then got a steal and a basket, playing off the top of the press, to put VHS up 10 at 52-42 with three minutes, 10 seconds to go.

Hinds got it back to six on two occassions, the last at 58-52 following Mercedes Williams’ basket with 42 seconds left.

Besides the turnovers, of which seven came in the fourth quarter, Hinds was also hurt by bad free throw shooting, making just 10 of 29.

Jerrica Thomas led Hinds with 15 and Iyuanna Brown had 13.

The War Dawgs (15-2) placed four players in double figures to avenge an earlier loss to the Gators in the boys semifinal game of the Ranger Roundup.

Joseph White tossed in 21 points, including a massive alley-oop dunk that put Hinds up 64-42 in the fourth quarter. Jarnovian Washington hit five 3-pointers and ended with 18 points, while JaCorey White had 14 and Kendrick Washington 10 for the War Dawgs who will meet the Morton-Raymond boys winner tonight at 6:30 in the finals.

&#8220Hinds was patient and got the shot they wanted while we made a lot unforced errors,” VHS coach Dellie C. Robinson said. &#8220When we go bad, we’re pretty bad.”

Tony Ammons led the Gators (9-5) with 10 points while Brandon Harper was held to just eight. The Gators play today at 2 p.m. in the consolation game.
