Win over Vikings made VHS’ football season|[12/28/2005]

The smile on Vicksburg High football coach Alonzo Stevens’ face has yet to disappear.

Maybe the ice-water bath he took during the final seconds of a 10-0 Vicksburg win over Warren Central froze that smile into place.

The Gators made history in a year like no other, beating their archrivals for the first time at Viking Stadium, ending years and years of frustration, blowouts and a few close calls.

The win also earned Vicksburg a playoff spot, alongside the Vikings. Both were shortlived, however, as each team was ousted in the first round. Porters Chapel made the deepest run into the football playoffs, losing to Lee, Ark., in the Academy-A state semifinals.
