When Donny Fuller talked Tuesday night, his Warren Central Lady Vikes listened.
Boy, did they ever listen.
Inspired by a halftime tongue-lashing from their coach, the Lady Vikes outscored Port Gibson 24-5 in the first seven minutes of the third quarter and went on to claim a 69-60 victory over the Lady Waves.
Sha’Kayla Caples led Warren Central with 17 points and 16 rebounds, and Brittany Willis scored 18 points. Karnina Bunch added 10 points and seven assists for the Lady Vikes (11-4), who outrebounded Port Gibson 37-16 in the game.
Katrina Wilson led Port Gibson (7-12) with 17 points, Regina Grigsby scored 14 and Nakia Dotson had 12. Grigsby and Dotson also had five steals apiece.
“Coach Fuller yelled at us a little bit, so we had to get it together. I know practice is going to be rough on us tomorrow,” said a chuckling Amanda Doyle, who finished with eight points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists. “He said we played like we practiced yesterday, and we just had to pick it up.”
After trailing 26-22 at halftime, Warren Central came out of the locker room on fire. Willis and Bunch each hit a 3-pointer in a 10-3 run over the first three minutes of the third quarter that put the Lady Vikes ahead for good.
“We just couldn’t check anybody in the third quarter,” Port Gibson coach Harold Liggans said.
WC extended the lead to as many as 15 points, 46-31, before Port Gibson rallied in the final minute of the third quarter to cut it to 46-37 at the end of the period.
Port Gibson played Warren Central to a standstill in the fourth quarter, but the deficit was too much to overcome. The Lady Waves never got closer than nine points in the final eight minutes.
(B) WC 65, Port Gibson 32.
The Lady Vikes weren’t the only Warren Central team that used a decisive third quarter to beat Port Gibson on Tuesday.
The Vikings held Port Gibson to two points and no field goals in the third period, outscoring the Blue Waves 15-2 in the process and setting the stage for a 32-point victory.
Mario Luckett led Warren Central (8-5) with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Shone Ester scored 12 points and Shaun Walker scored 10. Karl Fleming led Port Gibson (6-13) with 10 points.
Warren Central opened a 27-16 lead at halftime, then blew the game open in the third quarter. Ester connected with Luckett for an alley-oop dunk to cap an 8-0 run that gave the Vikings a 35-16 lead, and a combination of solid defense and poor shooting by Port Gibson finished the job.
The Blue Waves went 0-for-7 from the field in the third quarter. They didn’t score until Dominique Ratliff sank a pair of free throws with 1:24 to play in the period.
(G) Benton 72, PCA 48.
The Porters Chapel Lady Eagles (4-8) fell to Benton Academy, 72-48, in the first round of the Veritas Tournament on Tuesday.
Lauren Johnson scored 23 points to lead PCA, which will play either Mt. Salus or Veritas on Saturday morning at 11.
