William Conrad Harris.
RAYMOND – William Conrad Harris, 86, passed away on Friday, Jan. 6, 2006, at his home in the Lebanon community in Hinds County.
Visitation will be at Glenwood Funeral Home in Utica from 4 until 6 p.m. today. Services, with Dr. Bill Barcley officiating, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Old Lebanon Presbyterian Church on Highway 18 with burial in the church cemetery.
Conrad was a graduate of Utica High School and Mississippi State University in 1942 with a degree in agricultural economics. He joined the U.S. Navy, receiving basic training at Notre Dame, and was commissioned as an ensign after further training at Northwestern. He was one of a group who put LST 487 in commission in San Francisco and immediately left for the South Pacific, where he served as a gunnery officer aboard the LST for two years. During this service, he obtained the rank of lieutenant. Upon his discharge in 1945, he returned to Lebanon, where he engaged in farming and cattle operations until his death.
He was a member of Utica Presbyterian Church for many years, serving as a deacon and elder, and then a member of Lebanon Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Harris was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie and Martin Harris; a brother, George Harris; two sisters, Edith Harris and Louise Harris Cain; and a son-in-law, John Guider.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Eva Lois; his daughter, Beth Guider of Utica; his son, Bill Harris and wife Lisa of Lebanon; his sister, Sarah Harris Potts of Ridgeland; and six grandchildren, Susan, Meredith and Alison Guider, all of Utica, and Will, Emily and Rebecca Harris, all of Lebanon.
Pallbearers will be Will Harris, Steve Beard, Jerry Beard, Hal Liddell, Joe Liddell and Roy Liddell.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lebanon Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 310 Oak St., Learned, MS 39154.
Alice Margaret Searcy Russell.
WINNSBORO – Alice Margaret Searcy Russell died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006. She was 80.
Mrs. Russell, a resident of Monroe and formerly of Winnsboro, was a retired registered nurse.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Young’s Community Memorial Funeral Home in Winnsboro. Burial will follow at Providence Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 9 tonight at the funeral home.
Leonard D. Theus.
ORLANDO, Fla. – Leonard D. Theus, 81 passed away Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at Orlando Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Theus was born March 12, 1924 in Greenville, Mississippi to the late James Edward Theus and Loulie Meyers Theus.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mattie Blake Theus Nichols and Millie Theus Smith.
He moved with his parents and sisters to Vicksburg, in 1932. In 1941, he graduated from Carr Central High School with honors and as president of the student body. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Army, later joining the Air Force. In 1950, he was recalled to serve in the Korean War.
He married his childhood sweetheart, Gladys Holliday, in 1951 and moved to Chicago, where he became a test engineer for Underwriters Laboratories. While attending Mississippi State University, Leonard was a member of Lamba Chi Alpha Fraternity. In 1954, he graduated from MSU, earning a degree in electrical engineering. In the summer of 1958, Leonard and his family moved to Orlando, Fla., where he accepted a position with the Martin Marietta Company. The Pershing Missile and the Patriot Missile were two of his projects. He retired from Martin in 1988 as senior group engineer.
Leonard loved music and fine arts. He played both the clarinet and saxophone in his high school band, and later with the Boone High Community Band. He loved to paint with oils. His passion was researching the genealogy of his family tree. He was proud that his ancestors were members of the Huguenot Society and Leonard served as president one year with the local chapter.
Mr. Theus was a founding member of both Orangewood Presbyterian Church and Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gladys Holliday Theus; daughter, Holly Theus Storrs of Orlando; and his sons, John Edward Theus of Sydney, Fla., Frank Russell Theus of Dubai, UAE (wife Julie, and three grandsons, Micah, Nathan and Joshua), and David Andrew Theus of Macclenny, Fla. (wife Sheila and two granddaughters, Vanessa and Sarah). He is also survived by a nephew, four nieces and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Newcomer Family Funeral Home, East Orlando, 895 S. Goldenrod Road is handling funeral arrangements. A viewing is scheduled for family and friends today from 2 until 6 p.m. The funeral service is Monday, Jan. 9 at 10 a.m. at Newcomer Family Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.
