4 Eagles expected to sign on Feb. 1|[1/12/06]

For most of its 32-year history, Porters Chapel’s efforts on the football field have been lackluster at best.
The team has had only a handful of winning seasons and went four years, from 1987-90, without a program due to lack of interest.
The last few years have brought unprecedented success to the MPSA school, however, and an unheard of benefit – what might be the first true recruiting class in school history.
Four PCA players are expected to sign with either junior colleges or four-year schools on national signing day Feb. 1. PCA has had players sign with colleges in the past, but never so many at one time.
“We just really haven’t had kids in the past who have been athletically talented enough to play at the next level. We were fortunate enough to have some success these last couple years, and get some schools to come look at some kids,” said PCA coach Randy Wright, who has been with the school for a decade. “We had college coaches at most of our games this year, which was something new for us.”
Most of the scouts came to see PCA tailback Chris Mixon. The Vicksburg Post’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2005 rushed for 1,503 yards and 20 touchdowns and totaled more than 100 tackles while leading the Eagles to the Class A North State championship game.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder has received interest from a half-dozen college programs, including Southern Miss and Delta State. He took a visit to Delta State over Christmas break and has another visit scheduled later this month.
“I like Delta State. If they offer me something and Southern doesn’t, that’s probably where I’ll end up going,” said Mixon, who is also being recruited by Hinds Community College, Millsaps, Belhaven and Mississippi College. “I just really want to play somewhere, whether it’s Division I or Division II. I just want to make it to the next level and play.”
Mississippi College probably won’t end up with Mixon, but they did find another Eagle that may fit into their program.
PCA offensive lineman Sidney Meacham has talked with coaches from the Clinton school and has a visit scheduled for Jan. 28.
“I’m probably going to go there most likely, and if I can play football that’s even better,” Meacham said. “It’s a really good school, a really smart school.”
Two more PCA players, Kenny Simms and Evan Rogers, are also expected to sign on Feb. 1.
Simms, who amassed 1,163 all-purpose yards on offense and seven sacks at defensive end last season, is being recruited by Divison II’s Ouachita Baptist and Southwest Baptist University, as well as Division III Mississippi College.
Rogers, PCA’s kicker, has been offered a soccer scholarship with Mississippi Delta Community College and is likely to play football as well. Rogers converted on 48 of 55 extra points and 3 of 6 field goals for PCA this season.
