Greenville (11-6, 1-1) appeared set to blow the Vikings out of their own gym by streaking out to a 19-9 first quarter lead. But a second quarter adjustment by WC coach Jesse Johnson paid off.

&#8220Greenville is very athletic and we couldn’t out-jump them in any situation. We made an adjustment to start using ball fakes and draw the foul, instead of trying to shoot over them,” Johnson said.

The plan worked and the Vikings got themselves back in the game, taking their first lead right before the first half horn at 31-30.

Greenville made just one of its first 10 shots to open the third and the Vikings took advantage, going up 41-34.

The Hornets, however, scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to tie it at 41-all. A free throw by Mario Luckett put the Vikings back ahead. A steal and layup by Pugh made it 44-41. Pugh then added a second basket off a 2-on-1 break.

Andre Thomas, who was 8-of-10 from the line, made his last two for a 51-44 lead with three minutes left.

But the Vikings (10-6, 2-0) couldn’t get the clinching score, missing a pair of inside shots. Greenville countered with six points from LeDerek Swilley to pull within one at 51-50.

A free throw by Tiger Robinson followed by one from Shaan Walker made it 53-50 with 23.9 seconds left. Greenville’s Donald Fields shot at a tie failed to draw iron. Pugh then hit two free throws to make it 55-50.

&#8220Jula is a guy who scores in spurts. Tonight he had a good spurt,” Johnson said. &#8220That was a good win for us but we’ve got to go back up there (Greenville) next week before we play Madison Central” on Jan. 24.

Veronica Miller’s try for the tie rimmed out, leaving the Lady Vikes three points short in a shootout with the Honey Bees (6-11, 2-0).

WC coach Donny Fuller gave credit to Greenville.

&#8220They just shot lights out. We knew they were guard oriented but I didn’t expect No. 11 (Alyssa Johnson) to shoot like she did,” Fuller said. &#8220Then we made some pitiful decisions when we were up five in the fourth quarter. We need to protect the ball and here we were trying to do crossover dribbles.”

Johnson knocked down five 3-pointers and finished with 23 points.

Yet it was treys by Tiarra Jackson and Marchetta Parker that pulled Greenville from a 61-56 deficit to within one at 63-62 with two minutes left.

Johnson’s 12-foot shot from the baseline put Greenville in the lead, but two free throws by Sha’Kayla Caples gave WC its last lead, 65-64, with 1:31 left. The Lady Vikes, though, failed to block out Shuwara Jackson on an offensive rebound and her basket made it 66-65.

Brittany Willis, who had six points, then made a costly turnover off the dribble which Greenville converted into a three-point lead.

Caples led WC (12-6, 1-1) with 27 points. Amanda Doyle had 16. Jackson had 15 for Greenville while Parker added 13.
