A blow to the head was what killed a 72-year-old Warren County woman late Saturday night during what appeared to be a robbery.

Elizabeth Williams’ body was found by her niece and niece’s husband just after noon Sunday following several unanswered calls to her mobile home at 1508 Greenhill Road off U.S. 80 East.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace would not comment on what weapon may have been used in the assault, and he said no charges had been filed.

An autopsy on Warren County’s first homicide victim since 2004 was performed Monday night at Mississippi Mortuary Services in Rankin County.

&#8220The primary cause of death was blunt trauma to the head,” said Pace. &#8220I’m not going to be more specific than that at this point.”

During the past year, Pace said, Williams had filed theft reports from her home three times.

Her sister, Katherine Poole, who lives near Williams’ home, said she believes robbery was the motive.

&#8220She had been broken into probably five times over the past year,” said Poole, 68. &#8220She’s had guns stolen, she’s had money stolen, she’s had her house ransacked.”

Williams’ green 1997 Chevrolet Malibu was missing from the front of her home when her body was discovered and was found later that day outside a motel on U.S. 80. It remained at the Warren County Jail today being analyzed for fingerprints and other evidence.

&#8220We’re continuing to interview people today,” Pace said this morning. &#8220We worked all day (Monday), late last night and into the wee hours of this morning, and our deputies are back in the field today.”

Williams’ niece and her niece’s husband went into the house because, although Williams’ car was gone, her small dogs were inside and her television was on, Poole said.

Williams, who has five children and 17 grandchildren, was born in Arkansas but had lived in Vicksburg most of her life, said Poole, who said she and her sister worked at area Kroger stores once or twice a month demonstrating products. The two had worked at Kroger in Clinton the night before Williams’ body was found.

&#8220Me and my sister have been on our own for 53 years and just had each other,” said Poole. &#8220She and I were typical sisters. We fussed, fought and argued but we stuck together, and if you got between us we’d both jump on you.”

Williams had worked as a cook and waitress at various restaurants for more than 50 years, Poole said, most recently at Eagle Lake for 17 years, before retiring.

Glenwood Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Vicksburg recorded seven homicides in 2005, all inside the city limits. Warren County reported none.
