Three members of a family died in a mobile home fire in Utica Tuesday morning, two of them young children, authorities said.
Angel McGriggs, 18; and her cousins, Charles Brown Jr., 4; and Isabella McGriggs, 3, died in the blaze that destroyed their home at 2714 Adams Station Road, about six miles from the intersection of Mississippi 27 and Mississippi 18 in northwestern Hinds County.
The teenager reportedly was baby-sitting the small children.
The cause of the fire was under investigation by the Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office. Calls to officials with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department and coroner were not immediately returned.
Temperatures at the time of the fire, which was reported by a passer-by at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, seemed to indicate a heater or oven sparked the blaze.
State Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Millard D. Mackey said investigator Jim Woodard of the State Fire Marshal’s Office is leading the investigation of what caused the fire, one he hopes can be wrapped up by later today.
“This was a very tragic occurrence. We don’t like to speculate. We want to wait and get all the facts,” Mackey said.
