A Vicksburg man was in custody this morning, and Vicksburg Police said he is a suspect in at least some of the 37 business burglaries reported in the city last month.

&#8220We were out late this morning working on it,” Capt. Mark Culbertson said. &#8220We do expect later today to probably be charging him.”

The head of the city’s detective division would not release information on the suspect or what led to the arrest, but he did say the arrest came Wednesday.

He also said the suspect is not believed linked to another business burglary – the first in February – reported this morning in one of the same medical-office strips hit in the January burglaries.

In this morning’s break-in, reported at 2:36, an alarm was sounded at the Dermatology and Skin Care Clinic at 1202 Mission Park Drive, Culbertson said. Entry was gained, he said, but nothing was reported missing. The office of Dr. Kimberly Winters, a block away at 1002 Mission Park Drive, reported a window knocked out but no entry gained on Jan. 24.

Police reported 37 burglaries, thefts and attempted break-ins at local businesses in January, about triple the 2005 monthly average. More than half were in a square-mile area near Interstate 20, encompassing Mission 66, Indiana Avenue, North and South Frontage Roads and Halls Ferry Road.

Deputy Chief Richard O’Bannon said Tuesday he suspected a single person was responsible for many of the burglaries, especially several one-night hits in the same shopping center or small area. Three businesses – CitiFinancial on Indiana Avenue, CDS Home Care on Mission 66 and CompUDoc Inc. on Clay Street – had multiple break-ins or attempted break-ins during the month. Several doctor’s offices and other health-related businesses near each other on Mission 66 and Mission Park Drive were also targeted on different nights.

Culbertson would not specify which burglaries in which police believe the suspect was involved.

He said the investigation will extend into Hinds County today before a charge can be made, but he offered no details. He said the break-ins have not been tied to any crackdown on crime in Jackson.

&#8220We’re investigating this as strictly local,” Culbertson said.
