The blistering style of defending champ CM&I proved too much for Porters Chapel in the District 4-A championship game Saturday night at PCA.
CM&I shrugged off a poor shooting first half to crush the Eagles 92-49.
Porters Chapel (16-8) will now be seeded No. 2 in next week’s North Central-A Tournament at Sharkey-Issaquena in Rolling Fork. They will play the No. 3 seed from District 3-A. CM&I (20-3) will take on the fourth seed.
“We play hard and fast and we try to force an uptempo in order to wear you down in the end,” CM&I coach Dennis Willams said. “We changed some things at the half after we didn’t shoot that well.”
PCA hung in there for a half, drawing even at 23-all after two free throws from All-District pick Hayden Hales.
It was 29-28 CM&I with two minutes to go before halftime when the Crusaders went on a 10-2 spurt to close the half.
They opened the second with a 9-0 run to make it 48-30 and PCA never threatened again. CM&I scored 28 in the third quarter and led 67-42. It was 85-47 with 4:35 to go when Williams cleared his bench.
“We got out of control there toward the end of the second quarter after staying with them. But it’s hard to play them when you get behind,” PCA coach Jim Delaughter said.
CM&I put five players in double figures, led by MVP Jonathan Hardy with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Nick Johnson and Curtis Bailey also had 18 points apiece.
(B) SIA 43, Tri-County 40.
Seth Brown tossed in a game-high 31 points to lift the Confederates past Tri-County.
SIA (16-10) will be the No. 3 seed from District 4-A when they host next week’s North Central-A Tournament in Rolling Fork.
(G) SIA 34, PCA 29.
Jennifer Heigle was the only player in double figures as SIA slipped by Porters Chapel to take the girls consolation game.
Porters Chapel (8-16) will be seeded as the No. 4 team from District 4-A and will face the District 3-A champion next week at the North Central A Tournament in Rolling Fork.
Katie Koestler had seven points to lead PCA.
(G) Mt. Salus 65, Rebul 53.
Mary Kathryn Govero matched Rebul’s total output with 53 points in leading the Lady Eagles (30-7) to the District 4-A title.
Govero made 17 field goals, all from inside 18 feet and in, during an awesome display of mid-range shooting. She was also 19-of-23 from the free throw line.
“I usually don’t shoot 3-pointers, but they had played us a zone the last time we met. Tonight, they played us man. Fifty-three is a new high for me,” Govero said.
Govero’s previous best was 51 points earlier this season against Oak Hill.
Mt. Salus needed the big effort from its star because Rebul (24-4) kept it close until the final four minutes when the Lady Eagles went up by 15 points. It was 24-20 at the half and 41-33 after three quarters.
Caroline Blocker tossed in 24 points to lead Rebul. Courtney Roberts had 11.
