A woman was killed and a man was injured this morning when an 18-wheeler on Interstate 20 lost control and crashed into a ravine where the highway crosses Clear Creek.

Passenger Tedda Jane Kelly, 28, 1417 Old Dover Road, Bentonia, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, said Warren County Coroner John Thomason. The driver, Ronnie Edward Peters Jr., 28, who shares the same address as Kelly, was injured and driven to River Region Medical Center. The couple’s 3-year-old son, Trey Edward Peters, was not injured.

&#8220Miraculously, that boy didn’t have a scratch on him,” Thomason said. Trey is being cared for by Kelly’s mother, also from Bentonia, he said.

Peters remained in the emergency room this morning but was scheduled to be released later today, said hospital spokesman Diane Gawronski.

Peters apparently fell asleep as he was driving west on I-20 around 4:15 a.m., said Thomason. The 18-wheeler hit the railing along the median and rode it for about 30 yards before veering to the left of the road and crashing into the ravine between the I-20 bridges across Clear Creek.

Warren County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded within minutes of the 4:23 a.m. call, said Sheriff Martin Pace.

&#8220Deputies were able to go out and swim into the water and actually crawl up into the truck,” Pace said. &#8220Deputy Mike Marshall was able to pull the boy out of the cab and hand him off to Deputy Sam Winchester, and they were able to get the driver out, which allowed them access to the victim.”

The truck, owned by Johnson Farms of Bentonia, was hauling an empty grain trailer.

Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol is in charge of the investigation, Pace said.

The death is the county’s first in an auto accident this year.
