There was more on the line than just a divisional title for the Warren Central Lady Vikes Saturday night at Madison Central.
If the Lady Vikes could have beaten Greenville in the Division 3-5A final, coach Donny Fuller’s team would be in position for a home-court advantage all the way through the North State Tournament.
Greenville had other ideas, using its quick guards and position rebounding to outlast Warren Central 72-71 in double overtime for the divisional title.
With the loss, the Lady Vikes (21-9) must head to the Memphis area to battle Division 2-5A champion Olive Branch (22-7) in a 5A North State satellite game. Greenville (12-15) stays at home to face Southaven.
While disappointed with the loss, Fuller says it could still work out for the Lady Vikes.
“What we’ve got to do is go up and whip Olive Branch (tonight), have Tupelo beat Clinton, and then we’re right where we need to be and that is home for the North State Tournament,” Fuller said.
Clinton (26-4) has the first option to host the four-team North State Tournament, which begins Friday. The Lady Arrows, however, were beaten 74-71 by Murrah in the Division 4-5A final and now face a stern test tonight at Tupelo, the defending North State champions. Tupelo beat Clinton in the finals of the Northwest Rankin Tournament in late December.
Warren Central has the second option, meaning they get the host role if Clinton gets eliminated. If both lose, then the tournament heads to Tupelo.
Olive Branch enters the satellite round having won two straight to win the Division 1-5A Tournament. Before the tournament, the Lady Conquistadors had lost four straight, all to non 5A teams.
Also hitting the road tonight will be the St. Aloysius Lady Flashes (26-3), who face a monster challenge in Division 5-1A champ McAdams (27-3).
Lady Flashes coach Drew McBrayer said he knows little about McAdams, but expects an up-tempo game.
“They are very athletic and will press us all over the floor. They want to score in the 90s,” said McBrayer, whose team has lost its last two games after starting 26-1. “We can’t play that kind of game.”
St. Al fell to host Enterprise-Lincoln 48-47 in the opening round of the 7-1A Tournament, then were upset by Bogue Chitto 61-55 in the consolation game.
“I think it was a wakeup call,” McBrayer said. “I told them after the Bogue Chitto game that it is time to refocus and turn our attention to the playoffs.”
In Class 2A, the one-loss Hinds AHS Lady Bulldogs will battle Bassfield tonight in Utica. South Delta also will be playing today at South Pontotoc.
