Sha’Kayla Caples and Brittany Willis are Warren Central’s top two scorers, combining for more than 25 points per game.
But what happens when they get in foul trouble? How about winded?.
That’s where Kaci Harris, Veronica Miller and Brittany Erves step in.
The trio are the first three players off the bench. Like offensive linemen in football, they are often overlooked and sometimes under appreciated.
With a North State tournament matchup looming with Murrah tonight, all three may be called on. The Lady Vikes have to win one out of two games this weekend at Clinton High to earn a third-straight berth in the Mississippi Coliseum. Tipoff for tonight’s game is at 6 p.m. Clinton and Greenville will meet in the other semifinal at 7:30.
“They’ve all done a great job coming off the bench, giving us quality minutes,” WC coach Donny Fuller said. “That’s a key to us. They are good players too.”
Miller and Harris average 4.9 and 4.3 points per game, respectively, and Erves is scoring 1.3 points per game.
Each brings a different aspect to the game.
“I get out there to help my teammates as best I can,” said Miller, a 3-point threat who has hit 23 treys this season.
While Miller shoots from the outside, Harris and Erves command the post area.
“I try to do whatever I have to,” said Harris, who also averages nearly three rebounds per game.
All three could see time tonight against a Lady Mustang team that has already beaten Warren Central this season by double digits.
The two met in the Jackson Public Schools Tournament with Murrah taking a 69-56 decision. The Lady Mustangs held a 48-34 rebounding advantage, including 21 offensive rebounds.
“We have to rebound better, no doubt,” Fuller said. “Our main focus this week, though, was to get our legs back under us. We were dead tired on Tuesday.”
Warren Central traveled to and defeated Olive Branch on Monday night to earn the matchup with Murrah.
The Jackson Public Schools power enters the game with a 28-3 record, having not lost a game since a Jan. 13 loss to Clinton. Murrah has won 12 of their last 13 games.
LaSondra Barrett, a 6-foot, 1-inch sophomore, averages 18.4 points per game and scored 21 against the Lady Vikes in December. Tanecka Carey and Brandi Simmons both average double figures.
“I’ve watched the Barrett kid grow up playing AAU. Her dad’s an official and I know him well,” Fuller said. “They go about seven deep and have a lot of kids that can come in and score.”
