In a matchup of semifinalists from last year’s Class 5A playoffs, Madison Central appears loaded for another shot at a state title while the Warren Central Lady Vikes face a rebuilding job under new coach Chris Perritt.
Madison Central returns all nine starters back from last year’s team that was upset by eventual state champion Southaven in the North State series. The Lady Vikes, meanwhile, lost nearly all of its pitching and a good portion of its offense with the departure of Lauren Anderson, Brittany Fuller and Cookie Johnson.
WC (1-1), however, made a game of it for three innings before the power pitching of Madison ace Lindsey Perry and timely hitting became too much for the Lady Vikes. Perry tossed a 1-hitter, striking out 13 in the 10-0 win.
“I would’ve liked for us to jump out quicker, but Tiffany (Fuller) did a very good job with her off-speed stuff,” MC coach Ashley Hicks said.
Fuller kept the Lady Jaguars off the board for two innings before getting tagged for two runs in the third. Four walks in the fourth helped Madison enjoy a four-run at-bat and a 6-0 lead.
“Oh yea, this was a big-time measuring stick that we needed,” said Perritt who replaced long-time Lady Vikes coach Lucy Young. “We saw where we have a long way to go. I wish we had been a little bit better than what we showed.
“We just didn’t do what we needed to against a top-notch, Class 5A pitcher,” Perritt said of Perry, who at one point, struck out eight straight Lady Vikes.
The lone WC hit came in the second when Mandy Fuller went sharply up the middle. Perry retired the next two Lady Vikes to end the threat.
The other WC highlight was an outstanding running catch by newcomer Kirsten Tackett in center field that saved two runs in the Madison fifth.
WC was down 10-0 in the sixth when they loaded the bases after Perry’s lone issued walk to Dana Weber and two errors. She then got her 13th fan to end the game.
St. Aloysius 12, Mize 1.
Catelyn Park recorded her second victory of the season as the Lady Flashes rolled over Mize on Friday.
St. Al trailed 1-0 in the top of the fourth before exploding for eight runs on only three hits coupled with aggressive baserunning.
St. Al tacked on four runs in the fifth before the game was called because of the mercy rule.
Park pitched three innings, struck out six and allowed one unearned run. Sarah Franco struck out six in relief.
Ashley Magee went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs. She also stole three bases.
The Lady Flashes are scheduled to host Cathedral today at 6 p.m.
