After four straight rainouts and limited practice time, the Porters Chapel Academy baseball team showed signs of rust Monday night in a 6-5 victory over East Holmes.

The Eagles committed seven errors, but were helped by a strong pitching performance by Hayden Hales and some clutch hitting.

&#8220We made way too many mistakes tonight and didn’t play really well,” PCA coach Randy Wright said. &#8220We stuck it out and got a win and hit the ball well in spots.”

Hales pitched five innings to earn the win. He allowed five runs, only one of them earned, on three hits and struck out four.

Hales gave up a sixth-inning double to Bennett Womble before being replaced by Brady Towne.

Towne walked the first batter he faced, then retired the next two before allowing an RBI single to Will Watkins. The Eagles got out of the sixth with the lead intact after Sloan Parkinson, who had walked, tried to reach third on Watkins’ single and was gunned down.

With one out in the seventh, Jamie Boyette reached first on an error, advanced to second on another error and moved to third on a groundout. With two outs, Towne retired Will Cain swinging to end the game and earn the save.

Dan Ivey paced Porters Chapel on offense with three singles and three RBIs, while Hales added a double. Moose Carney had a pair of RBIs and Cole Smith added an RBI.

Porters Chapel took an early lead in the first after East Holmes’ outfielders dropped two straight pop flies to start the game. Chris Mixon scored on a Carney groundout and Michael Busby came around to score on Ivey’s first single for a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles added a single run in the second for a 3-0 lead. East Holmes tied the game in the third on a three-run home run by Greg Watkins. Craig Pee and Jamie Boyette, who both reached base on PCA miscues, scored on Watkins’ home run.

In the bottom of the inning, Ivey hit a two-RBI single to give the lead back to PCA 5-3.

East Holmes scored single runs in the fourth and sixth, while PCA tallied what proved to be the game-winning run in the fifth.

With the speedy Mixon on third and one out, Carney hit a grounder back to the pitcher, who gunned Carney at first. Mixon broke for home and barely beat the throw for the 6-5 lead.

&#8220The thing for us last week was not only did we not get to play, we didn’t get to practice,” Wright said. &#8220We had no cage to get in and no field to get on. It was a tough week for us.”

Porters Chapel is scheduled to host Riverfield today at 6.
