Less than 24 hours after committing four errors in their first loss of the season, the Vicksburg Gators narrowly averted another defensive meltdown on Saturday.
Vicksburg held on to beat defending Class 1A champion Greenville-St. Joe, 4-2, despite making three errors in the seventh inning at Bazinsky Field.
The Irish (3-3) were only able to get one run off the errors as VHS’ Avery Mathes picked up the save in relief of Jordan Henry.
St. Joe tied it 1-1 in the fourth, but VHS (10-1) retook the lead in the fifth with a three-run rally highlighted by Eric Coleman’s RBI hit.
St. Al 18, Madison-St. Joe 3.
Jordan Muirhead led off with a home run for the second straight game, Blake Tidwell added a two-run double during a nine-run first inning, and St. Aloysius (6-3) crushed Madison-St. Joe.
Stephen Evans (1-0) earned the win for St. Al, and helped his own cause with three hits and an RBI. Pierson Waring and Marsh Willis also had two hits and three RBIs.
Memphis 4, PCA 3.
Tyler Whitney held Porters Chapel to five hits and struck out 15, lifting Memphis Home School over the Eagles at the Veritas Tournament in Jackson.
Ryan Gordon’s RBI single in the top of the seventh broke a 3-3 tie and turned out to be the game-winner for Memphis. Chris Mixon went 2-for-4 with a triple for PCA.
Oak Hill 5, PCA 4.
Oak Hill Academy scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to steal a win from Porters Chapel. PCA put two runners on in the seventh, but managed only one run.
Mixon and Matt Cranfield each had two hits for PCA. Michael Busby went 2-for-4 with a triple and a two-run single for the Eagles (6-4).
