Allen Lamar Burrell.
Allen Lamar Burrell, 54, died Friday, March 17, 2006, in Port Gibson. Visitation will be held today from 4-7 p.m. at Glenwood Funeral Home. Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Port Gibson United Methodist Church with burial in Wintergreen Cemetery.
Allen was a native of Cleveland, Miss. He attended Cleveland High School, Delta State University and the University of Mississippi Law School. He moved to Port Gibson in 1975, where he practiced law for over thirty years. He was an active member of Port Gibson United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher, chairman of the Finance Committee, past chairman of the Administrative Board, and legal counsel. He was also a leader in both professional and civic organizations, serving as the board attorney for RiverHills Bank, Southwest EPA and the Claiborne County Port Commission. He also served as the attorney for the Claiborne County Board of Supervisors for 26 years. He was a past president of the Mississippi Association of County Board Attorneys and vice-chairman of the Mississippi Lawyers Committee. He was also an active member of the Mississippi State Bar Association, where he served on the Board of Bar Commissioners. Civically, Allen served as a past president of the Port Gibson Lion’s Club and was a member of the board for Claiborne Educational Foundation for 24 years. He was also a past president of the Delta State Alumni Association and was a member of the Lamar Order at the University of Mississippi.
Allen was preceded in death by his first wife, Rose Drake Burrell; and his father, Harry Allen Burrell.
He is survived by his wife, Michelle Knight Burrell; children, Benjamin Allen, Matthew Drake and Sara Elizabeth; his mother, Dorothy Burrell of Cleveland; one sister, Judy Taylor of Boyle, Miss.; and one brother, Dennis Burrell of Shaw, Miss.
The family asks that memorial donations be made to the Port Gibson United Methodist Church or the Rose Drake Burrell Scholarship at the Delta State Foundation Office, P.O. Box 3141, Delta State University, Cleveland, MS. 38733.
Tom Chaney.
Tom Chaney died Sunday, March 12, 2006, at his residence at Eagle Lake. He was 56.
Mr. Chaney was a native of Lake Village, Ark., and had been a resident of Vicksburg since 1992. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was the son of the late George and Dorothy Hubbard Chaney. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Bobby Joe Chaney, Jimmy Chaney and Andy Chaney.
He is survived by a son, Wesley Chaney of Clinton, Miss.; and two sisters, Nancy Evans of Clinton and Martha Mills of Grenada, Miss.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steven Smith officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Teddy DiBiase, Weston Moody, Josh Raggio, Wade Zimmerman, Tim Cain and Evan Williams.
