Warren County flush with all-star players, coaches|[3/30/06]

Annie Beaugh made a name for herself in the high school sports world as a deadeye shooter, a solid basketball player who could light up a scoreboard with her 3-point shooting and all-around skills.
It turns out she’s not too bad at her second sport, either.
Beaugh, a senior at St. Aloysius, was selected to play in the Mississippi Association of Coaches fast-pitch softball all-star game June 24 at Newton County High School. She’ll be joined by teammate Mary Myers Franco and coach Gene Rogillio on the South Class 1A/2A/3A team.
“It is real nice. I was real excited when I found out I made it,” Beaugh said. “I’m hoping I’ll get it in basketball. But softball is nice.”
Beaugh averaged 22.8 points per game and led St. Al’s basketball team to a 26-4 record and the Class 1A South State satellite game in her senior season. She wasn’t eligible to participate in the MAC basketball all-star game, however, since it features only players who were juniors in public schools this past season, and for the last three years Beaugh attended Porters Chapel Academy.
It was at PCA, however, that Beaugh started on the road to becoming a softball all-star.
Her only softball experience prior to high school was in a summer league when she was in junior high. But she became the starting shortstop for PCA’s fast-pitch team in her sophomore year and committed only eight errors while hitting .480.
“It was a little different. I had to adjust to it. But it wasn’t that bad,” Beaugh said of playing softball instead of basketball.
While Beaugh will play her final high school game on the diamond rather than the court, one of her former teammates will get a chance to play in the basketball all-star game.
Brittany Willis, who transferred from PCA to Warren Central before the 2004 school year, will be Warren County’s only representative in the game July 20 at Mississippi College. Clinton’s Ashley Daniels was also selected.
Willis, Daniels and the St. Al softball trio are just a few of the Vicksburg-area athletes selected to play in this summer’s MAC all-star games.
Warren Central soccer player Rusty Waites will join his coach, Jay Harrison, on the North team when they play the South All-Stars on June 17 at Hinds Community College in Raymond. Clinton’s Michael Goodlett and Michael Pardue will also play for the north. Vicksburg’s Coleman Morrison was selected to play in the game, but will not participate because of a schedule conflict.
Waites had several scholarship offers from junior colleges but turned them down to attend school at Mississippi State.
“It’s going to be a nice thing for him to go out on,” Harrison said. “Rusty can play with all of those guys. He was able to shut them down on defense when we played them.”
Mississippi State signee Andrea Harrison will represent St. Aloysius in the girls’ all-star game, the first time a St. Al girls player has been picked to play. She will join Vicksburg’s Beverley Simmons and Warren Central’s Mallory Wells on the North team, along with Clinton’s Nikki Bush and Mallory Coleman.
And in the Bernard Blackwell football all-star game July 21 at Mississippi College, Hinds AHS’ Marcel Young and Albert Williams will suit up for the South squad.
Noah Slater, the New Orleans native who moved to Vicksburg following Hurricane Katrina and played last season at St. Aloysius, was picked to play in the Mississippi-Alabama all-star game June 3.
