Canna Elizabeth Kendrick Ables, 82, of Vicksburg, died April 12, 2006, at River Region Medical Center, Vicksburg.

She was born in Cleveland, Va., the daughter of William Drayton and Valeria Lathen Hardin Kendrick. She grew up in Shelbiana, Ky., on Greasy Creek and was educated in the public schools there and in Neon, Ky.

She moved to Louisville, Ky., in 1943, where she met her future husband, Jackson Henderson Ables Jr. of Vicksburg, who was a student in the Navy’s engineering program at the University of Louisville. They were married on February 24, 1945, at Great Lakes Naval Station, Ill., and made their home in Vicksburg following the end of World War II.

Mrs. Ables was a renowned cook, an avid reader, a devotee of bluegrass music and a lifelong advocate of learning and public education. She was a charter member of the Cotton Patchers Quilt Club and an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jackson Henderson Ables Jr.; brothers Joseph, Franklin and William Kendrick; sisters Gladys Coleman, Katherine Rupert, Mary Blanton and Carol Jones; and a half-brother, Earl Kendrick.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan E. Ables of Vicksburg; sons Jackson H. Ables III of Flora and Timothy D. Ables of Clinton; grandchildren Christopher Bradley Ables of Jackson, Jackson Henderson Ables II and Spencer Fielding Ables of Clinton and Emily Cameron Ables and Ryan Kendrick Ables of Flora; brothers, Alfred Kendrick of Shelbiana, Ky., and John Kendrick of Doylestown, Ohio; and sisters Ada Brian of Lexington, Ky., Naomi Moore of Oklahoma City, Okla., Virginia Pratt of Douglas, Ga., and Mae Lawler of Jeffersontown, Ky.

Interment services will be Saturday, April 15, at 9 a.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery with Riles Funeral Home, Vicksburg, in charge. Visitation will be at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 15, followed at 11 a.m. by a memorial service at the church.

Honorary pallbearers will be Danny Spain, John Faulk, Richard Stockstill, Donnell Youngblood, Charles Lutz, Mark Monroe, Grady Leese, Bill Abney, John Lanting and Dr. Lee Giffin.

Memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, the American Heart Association, French Camp Academy or Berea College.

Johnie Lee Buck.

PORT GIBSON – Johnie Lee Buck died Monday, April 10, 2006, at River Region Medical Center. He was 66.

Mr. Buck is survived by his wife, Elvene Buck of Port Gibson; a daughter, Doris McClure of Utica; two stepsons, Reginald Webb of Chicago and Robert Webb of San Antonio, Texas; four brothers, the Rev. James Buck, LeDell Buck, Charles Buck and Louis &#8220L.A.” Buck, all of Port Gibson; five sisters, Daisy West and Rose Anna Daniels, both of Port Gibson, Beatrice Windmon of Hermanville and Willie Pigott and Dorothy Harris, both of Jackson; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Welcome Missionary Baptist Church in Port Gibson with the Rev. James Buck officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery with Thompson Funeral Home of Port Gibson in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1 until 6 p.m. Friday and from 11 a.m. Saturday until the service.

Evan L. Fleming Jr.

Evan L. Fleming Jr., died Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at his home in Vicksburg. He was 83.

Born in Baldwin, Ga., Mr. Fleming had been a resident of Vicksburg for the past 66 years. He retired as an engineer for R.G. LeTourneau. He later came back as a consultant. He was a member of the board of directors, Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation at Indiana University. He served as general grand master of the General Grand Council of Cryptic Masons International and the Grand Lodge of Mississippi. He was an active Mason throughout his life and held numerous Masonic offices. He was past presiding officer of the Grand York Rite Bodies of Mississippi. He was a 33rd-degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of First Methodist Protestant Church in Vicksburg.

Survivors include his wife, Carrie Clark Fleming of Vicksburg; a son, Evan Lonnie Fleming III of Fort Smith, Ark.; a daughter, Jeri Fleming Holgan of Yellville, Ark.; a sister, Helen F. Stone of Canton, Ga.; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Glenwood Funeral Home in Vicksburg with the Revs. Ed Hightower, Fred Bean and Jimmy Windham officiating. Burial will follow at Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be the members of the Hyland-Jarmon Masonic Lodge.

Mahalia Newsome-Hampton.

LITHONIA, Ga. – Mahalia Newsome-Hampton died Saturday, April, 8, 2006, at DeKalb Medical Center in Lithonia, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Annie Ruth Newsome; her father; and two sisters, Gloria Hargrove and Brenda Lee-Williams.

Survivors include her husband, Carl Hampton of Lithonia; a son, Brooks Williams Jr. of Lithonia; two daughters, Veronica Williams and Angie Williams, both of Lithonia; six brothers, Alonzo Yates of Natchez, Andrew Newsome, Roy Osborne and Enex Hyder Jr., all of Atlanta, Charles Newsome of Plano and Mitchell Hyder of Houston; two sisters, Marilyn Guy of Port Gibson and Kelly Thomas of Atlanta; six grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Church of Christ Holiness U.S.A. with the Rev. Eugene Carney officiating. Burial will follow at Clark Creek Cemetery in Pattison. Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Friday at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel and Saturday from 1 until the hour of service at the church.

Ruby C. Parish.

Services for Ruby C. Parish will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 until 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Ms. Parish died Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at River Region Medical Center in Vicksburg. She was 78.

She was a lifelong resident of Vicksburg.

Survivors include a son, Larry Parish of Vicksburg; two sisters, Mattie Bell Lyons and Mae Lee Jones, both of Port Gibson; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Andrew Robinson.

Services for Andrew &#8220High Pocket” Robinson will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at King Solomon Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 until 7 p.m. Friday at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home.

Mr. Robinson died Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at River Region Medical Center. He was 75.

A lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Mr. Robinson was a factory worker at Anderson-Tully. He was a member of King Solomon Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucille and Levi Robinson Sr.; four brothers, Levi Robinson Jr., James Robinson, Eddie Robinson and Jessie Robinson; and two sisters, Rosie Lee Robinson and Dorothy Conrad.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine Robinson of Vicksburg; three sons, Ronald Jenkins of San Bernardino, Calif., and Clarence Williams of Vicksburg and Roderick Johnson of Pine Bluff, Ark.; two daughters, Cheryl Jenkins and Denita Robinson, both of Vicksburg; two stepdaughters, Melissa Neal and Frankie Knox, both of Vicksburg; one stepson, James Washington of Vicksburg; one brother, Frederick Robinson of Vicksburg; one sister, Betty Bell of Vicksburg; and other relatives, including Dave Warner.

Cherrie P. Wilkinson.

CENTREVILLE – Cherrie P. Wilkinson died Saturday, April 8, 2006, at Field Memorial Community Hospital in Centreville. She was 63.

She is survived by her husband, Gerald E. Wilkinson, and a daughter, Cherie Wilkinson, both of of Centreville; three brothers, Cordell Hughes of Jackson, Donald Hughes of Sacramento, Calif., and Laval Hughes of New Orleans; and other relatives and friends including the Lassiter family of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Woodville. Burial will follow at the Wilkinson Family Cemetery in Centreville. Visitation will be at the church from 8:30 a.m. until the hour of the service.
