Mrs. Golding was born on May 31, 1919, in Clinton, Miss., to the Rev. Dudley Isaac Young and Myrtis Byrd Young. At the time of her birth, her father attended Mississippi College.
She spent her early years in McCool and Eden, Miss., where Rev. Young was a Baptist preacher in those towns. She attended school in Eden and Yazoo City and graduated from Mississippi College. After graduation from college, she lived and taught school and worked for the federal government in the cities of Greenwood and Florence and Alexandria, La. Before settling in Greenville, her father preached in Swiftwater and the Greenville Chinese Mission.
While working in Greenville as a legal secretary for Wynn, Hafter, Lake and Tindall, she met Thomas Golding, a planter from Winterville. They married in February 1947 and were the first residents of what is now known as Golding Acres, which Mr. Golding developed. She and her husband were like modern-day pioneers in 1960 when they sold everything they had and put their possessions and family into a Mercury station wagon and actually moved to the country of Guatemala, driving all the way there. They moved to Vicksburg in 1966 where her husband started Big River Shipbuilding and Ole Man River Towing.
From 1980 to 1997, she and her husband, who retired, lived on the Mississippi Gulf Coast at Diamondhead, Miss. They moved back to Vicksburg in 1997 in order to be close to their grandchildren.
An accomplished athlete, Angie won the Women’s Tennis Championship at the Vicksburg Country Club while in her 40s and made a hole-in-one in her 60s at Diamondhead. She also earned a Life Master in bridge. She was an active member of Alice Bell Garden Club in Greenville, the Greenville and Vicksburg Junior Auxiliaries. She served as a former hostess for the Miss Mississippi Pageant and a member of the Greenville and Vicksburg Country Clubs. She was also a member of Church of Holy Trinity.
Mrs. Golding was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Thomas Golding, of Vicksburg; her parents, the Rev. and Mrs. D.I. Young of Greenville; a brother, D.I. Young of Greenville; and a sister, Dr. Min Y. Peaster of Oxford.
She is survived by a son, Steve Golding and wife, Melody, of Vicksburg; a daughter, Carol Ann Golding Wilkerson and husband, Frank, of Ocean Springs; two cherished and devoted grandsons, Austin and John Reid Golding of Vicksburg, whose visits to her home she thoroughly enjoyed. She is also survived by a stepson, Thomas “Tad” Golding Jr. of San Diego; and three step grandchildren, Nathan and Jonathan, both of San Diego, and Cathy of New York City.
The family is grateful to her physician, Dr. William Wooten, for his concern and professionalism and special thanks to her loyal companion, Carolyn Parsons, along with Margie Thambi, Annie Grant, Alicia Buford and Wanda Bracey, all of Vicksburg.
Angie will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, friend and bridge player. She will be missed by all who knew her.
