Primary candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives are Dorothy &#8220Dot” Benford of Jackson, state Rep. Chuck Espy of Clarksdale and the incumbent, Rep. Bennie Thompson of Bolton.

The winner will advance to the Nov. 7 general election to face the Republican nominee, Yvonne R. Brown.

For the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, the candidates are Bill Bowlin of Hickory Flat, state Rep. Erik Fleming of Clinton, James O’Keefe of Long Beach and Catherine Starr of Hattiesburg.

The winner will face Sen. Trent Lott, a Republican, and the Libertarian Party’s candidate, Harold Taylor, of Nesbit.

The November ballot will include races for judicial offices in all state circuit-, chancery- and county-court districts; some district seats on school boards in some counties; and seats representing some counties on the District Board of Mississippi Levee Commissioners.

May 5 is also the qualifying deadline for judicial candidates.

May 6 is also the deadline for candidates to file qualifying papers for levee commissioner. In the levee-commission seat up for election from this area this year, incumbent Laurance Carter of Sharkey County was the only candidate who had filed as of Wednesday.

The school-board seat up for election in Warren County is for District 2 and is held by Zelmarine Murphy. The qualifying period for that election is from Aug. 9 until Sept. 8.

Judgeships are non-partisan. In area races:
