Mary L. Johnson.

PORT GIBSON – Services for Mary L. &#8220Bootsy” Johnson will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater St. Mark M.B. Church in Port Gibson with the Rev. Leon Howard officiating. Burial will follow at Thompson Memorial Garden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 until 6 tonight at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel, with family hour from 6 until 7, and from 10 a.m. until the hour of service Saturday at the church.

Mrs. Johnson died Saturday, May 6, 2006, at River Region Medical Center. She was 83.

She was a member of Greater St. Mark M.B. Church, where she was also a member of the choir.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Emma Parker; and a sister, Bernice Liggins.

Survivors include her husband, Frederick D. Johnson Sr. of Port Gibson; two sons, William E. Carpenter of Pearl and Frederick D. Johnson Jr. of Jackson; a daughter, Brenda D. Johnson of Los Angeles; a sister, Alma Roache of Gary, Ind.; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Mary Kimble.

Mary Kimble died Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at River Region Medical Center. She was 70.

Mrs. Kimble was born in Hollandale.

She was preceded in death by her father, James Green; her husband, Leroy Kimble Sr.; two sons, Jerry Kimble and Leroy Kimble Jr., and a sister, Sadie Green.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Kimble of Fort Knox, Ky., and Troy Kimble of Vicksburg; four daughters, Geraldine Kimble and Elizabeth Burkley, both of Vicksburg, Mary Stephens of Longview, Texas, and Debbie Anderson of Athens, Ga.; her mother, Blanche Collins Green of Greenville; two brothers, four sisters, 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Zion No. 1 M.B. Church with the Revs. Larry Brown and Joseph Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be from noon to 7 tonight with the family present from 6 until 7 at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Fellowship Foundation at Mount Zion No. 1 M.B. Church or Mount Pilgrim Church of Freetown Women’s Auxiliary Organization.

S.T. Lucas.

S.T. Lucas died Friday, May 5, 2006, in Chicago. He was 83.

Mr. Lucas was a native of Port Gibson and had lived in Chicago for more than 50 years. He was retired from Chicago Transit Authority.

He is survived by his grandson, Lester R. Smith of Vicksburg and Chicago.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy David M.B. Church, 731 W. 19th Place, Chicago, with Corbin Colonial Funeral Home in charge. Burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery in Hillside, Ill.

Kevin Lee Monroe.

LORMAN – Kevin Lee Monroe died Tuesday, May 9, 2006, in Lorman. He was 15.

Born in Biloxi, Kevin was a student at Jefferson County Middle School.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kelvin Monroe Sr. and Janet Laster.

Survivors include his grandmothers, Annette Brealand of Lorman and Adell Laster of Philadelphia; two brothers, Kelvin Monroe Jr. of Lorman and Larry Monroe of Biloxi; a sister, Yolanda Monroe of Lorman; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Waterloo Baptist Church in Lorman with the Rev. Tracy Collins officiating. Burial will follow at Waterloo Cemetery under the direction of Rollins Funeral Home in Fayette. Visitation will be from 2 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Barbella Shields.

VALLEJO, Calif. – Barbella &#8220Edna” Shields died Saturday, May 6, 2006, at Sutter Solano Hospital in Vallejo, Calif. She was 89.

Born in Backland, La., Mrs. Shields was a resident of Vicksburg until 1990. A housekeeper, she was a member of St. John M.B. Church in Vallejo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Viola Warren and James Shields; a daughter, Rita Rose; a brother, Luke Glasper; and three sisters, Linda Betts, Mamie Ware and Georgia Bolton.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Tucker of Vallejo; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives, including the Glasper, Perkins and Robinson families of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Leon Nelson officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 until 7 tonight and from noon Saturday until the hour of service at the funeral home.

George Simmons Jr.

UTICA – George &#8220Whit” Simmons Jr. died Thursday, May 11, 2006, at his home in Utica, after being a longtime patient of Parkinson’s disease. He was 81.

A native of Utica, Mr. Simmons served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He earned a bachelors degree in Accounting at Mississippi State University. Before beginning his federal government employment in 1962, he was employed in a family owned business of farming and farming finance for 14 years. Serving 24 years with the Corps of Engineers in accounting groups, he retired in 1986 as Chief of Resource Management at Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg. Employed with the Corps, he created many training programs and served as an avid instructor. He was a certified public accountant, past president of the Jackson Chapter and national director of the National Association of Accountants. A faithful worker of Utica Baptist Church, he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and treasurer.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Syble Stubbs Simmons of Utica; three sons, Whit Simmons and wife Marianne of Germantown, Tenn., Billy Simmons and wife Cindy of Clinton, and Harold Simmons and wife Debbie of Aurora, Colo.; a daughter, Rebecca Tuggle and husband Ross of Memphis; a sister, Myrtle McGaha and husband Tom of Austin, Texas; two brothers, Harold Simmons and wife Rita of Utica, and Sam Simmons and wife Peggy of Florence; seven grandchildren, Jill Schroeder and husband Brian, Jenny Simmons, Lilli Simmons, Sam Simmons and wife Kristen, Brad Estess and wife Shari, Loren Estess and Lana Estess; and two great-grandchildren, Lily Marie Simmons and Wade Estess.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Utica Baptist Church with the Rev. Ben James, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Utica Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Saturday until the hour of service at Glenwood Funeral Home in Utica.

Sylvia Lee Smith.

PORT GIBSON – Services for Sylvia Lee Smith will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Campbell Chapel M.B. Church with the Rev. James Jones officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 until 6 tonight at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel and from 1 p.m. Saturday until the hour of service at the church.

Mrs. Smith died Friday, May 5, 2006, at her home in Port Gibson. She was 86.

She was a member and a mother at Campbell Chapel Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carter and Pattie Boines; her husband, Charlie Smith Sr.; one son, Willie Allen; four sisters and seven brothers.

Survivors include five sons, Charlie L. Smith Jr. of Jackson, Franklin C. Smith and Carey Smith, both of Houston, Calvert Smith of Lorman and Dennis Smith of Vicksburg; a sister, Lucille Noble of Port Gibson; 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; and other friends and relatives, including Claudine Robinson of Port Gibson.

Freddie Lee Washington.

LOUISE, Miss. – Freddie Lee Washington died Sunday, May 7, 2006, at his home in Louise, Miss. He was 52.

Survivors include five daughters, Laneshia Robinson of Holly Bluff, LaShabra Robinson and Sharonda Robinson, both of Louise, and Brenda Dudley and Kimberly Dudley, both of Greenville; five sons, Troy Robinson, Savontez Robinson and Riko Robinson, all of Louise, Ricky Dudley and Gregory Dudley, both of Greenville; four sisters, Gloria Farley and Matilda Blank, both of Gautier, and Dorothy Blake and Betty Williams, both of Moss Point; seven brothers, Willie Washington and James Washington, both of Pascagoula, Thomas Washington and Larry Washington, both of Detroit, Earnest Washington of Montgomery, Ala., Bobby Washington of Gautier and Roosevelt Washington of Houston; 14 grandchildren; and other relatives, including Debra Roberts of Gautier.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Goodwill M.B. Church in Alps, Miss., with the Rev. Bruce Dorsey officiating . Burial will follow at Alps Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.
