The Tree House Cafe, a multistory restaurant and bar open for one year on Cherry Street, closed its doors Friday, owner Holly Beck said.
“We were losing too much money,” Beck said. “And Hurricane Katrina really hurt us, too, because people were busy helping out on the Gulf Coast and using their going-out money for aid.”
Vearl Beck said vandalism and threats against his wife’s life also hurried the closing.
“We had planned to keep the restaurant open until we could find a prospective buyer, but it wasn’t worth it,” Vearl Beck said. “Holly had received bodily threats, there was a knife in the door and her tires had been slashed.”
No police reports had been filed by the Becks as of Friday, according to the Vicksburg Police Department.
The restaurant, which staffed 35 to 40 employees and since opening May 2005, had added an entertainment facility called Phase 2 in October for use with business meetings, sports events, wedding receptions and, just last week, Vicksburg High School’s graduation party.
Holly Beck, who moved from South Haven, Mich., four years ago when her husband took a job at Polysin in Rolling Fork, said she named the restaurant as soon as she went inside.
“When the building was empty, I looked out the second story window and felt like I was in a tree house,” she said. “I thought that was a great idea because everyone loves tree houses.”
