Taylor Tankersley capped his whirlwind, weeklong introduction to the big leagues with a milestone.
The former Warren Central star got the final four outs of the Florida Marlins’ 7-3 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday to earn the first save of his major league career.
Tankersley, the Marlins’ first-round draft pick in 2004, entered the game in the eighth inning with two outs, a 6-3 lead and a runner on second. He struck out Geoff Blum to end the threat. In the ninth, he allowed a pair of singles to Dave Roberts and Mike Cameron before coaxing a double play ball out of Brian Giles. He then struck out Josh Bard to end the game.
Tankersley made his major league debut eight days earlier when he pitched the ninth inning in a 13-0 victory against Colorado.
In four appearances, Tankersley has not allowed a run in a total of three innings pitched. He has surrendered three hits, no walks and struck out four. His efforts helped the Marlins to a 6-3 record during their nine-game West Coast road trip.
