Getting sent to the loser’s bracket after a first round loss Saturday made for a long Sunday for the Mississippi Sluggers.
The Vicksburg-based 14-and-under team feasted on weaker pitching and won four straight games before running back into the team they lost to on Saturday at the beginning of bracket play. The MRYC Motion of Madison got a one-hit shutout to eliminate the Sluggers 3-0.
“We came back to face the same team that we lost to in the first game of bracket play. The girls held up pretty well but it was a hard adjustment to have to face pitching that goes from slower to faster,” Sluggers coach Howard Park said.
“We hit the ball well all day but that was against slower pitching. But I thought a lot of our girls had great tournaments. Cori White was strong and so are Mandy Fuller and Andi Hearn,” Park said.
White, from Clinton, had eight hits through the Sluggers’ four-game win streak on Sunday, including five doubles. She drove in four. Hearn drove in five off seven hits.
Against the Motion, the Sluggers were held to a fifth inning leadoff single by Mandy Fuller.
Kalee Sampley, who picked up a pair of pitching wins for the Sluggers, took the loss after giving up all three runs to the Motion in the third inning.
Vicksburg High’s Kristi Shelby played all five games Sunday for the Sluggers either at shortstop or in the circle. She had a two-hit shutout earlier in the day.
“It was a lot of games and most of them were back-to-back. I think we had just one break the whole day,” Shelby said. “But I love playing for this team. I know our high school team has had a horrible record but we won some games today.”
For the tournament, the Sluggers won six games overall. Two came in pool play and they were 4-2 in bracket play to finish third out of nine teams.
In the Sluggers’ game, it was: Sluggers 11, Southern Explosion 1; Sluggers 5, Purple Haze 0; Sluggers 3, Jinx 1; and Sluggers 11, Richland 1.
The Clinton Blast won the 14-under title, beating the Motion 15-0 in the finals.
Other title winners in the 34-team Rumble on the River included: the MS Wildfire defeated the Dixie Stix to claim the 10-and-under title. MRYC Motion whipped the Clinton Blast 15-7 in the 12-under title game while the Greenwood Red Hots blanked Full Count out of Bay St. Louis 3-0 to claim the 16-under crown.
