One through 12, the Vicksburg Venom made it a long day for Richland in Monday’s opening of the Cal Ripken 8-year-olds’ sectional tournament.

The Venom stung Richland for a 23-0 romp. Only one time did Richland get three outs to end a Venom at bat before six runs had scored. In some younger age groups, a six-run per inning rule is applied to keep scores lower and games on time.

&#8220We hit the ball better tonight than we’ve had all season,” Venom coach Todd Boolos said.

All 12 of the Venom batters drove in at least one run. Richland, meanwhile, made 10 errors and was limited to only two hits on offense.

&#8220That proves we can hit from top to bottom. We’ve prepared for this tournament by having played four other tournaments,” Boolos said.

The Cal Ripken sectional is the Venom’s fifth tournament of the season. They won the Morton Tournament and finished third in two others.

Brooks Boolos led the Venom hit parade by going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Lane Hynum and Ledaryan Huband each scored three runs while Brayden Stokes had two runs and two hits. Hitting inside the park home runs were Hynum, Huband and Landon Little.

The Venom ripped Mount Olive 24-2 to add a second victim Monday night. The win advances the Venom to today’s winners’ bracket meeting against Central Mississippi at 6 on the American Field.

Hynum and Dale Griffith each scored three times to lead the Venom against Mount Olive.

The Warren County Warriors won a pair of extra inning games to advance to a 7:30 p.m. game against North Jackson. In other action, North Jackson beat Philadelphia 12-4 and Central Mississippi whipped Jeff Davis 23-3.

In the 7-year-old sectional, the Vicksburg Stars downed Central Mississippi 17-12 and Florence beat the Vicksburg River Rats 12-3.

Warriors 22, Florence 21.

Trailing 21-18, the Warriors scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to win their second straight extra inning game in the 8-year-old Ripken Sectional.

Gabriel Riveros keyed the rally with a one-out double. He later scored to make it 21-20. Will Pratt’s grounder allowed Conner Wilkinson to circle around and score the game-winning run.

Warriors 15, Star 13.

The Warriors escaped from a major jam in the bottom of the sixth and then won it in the seventh as shortstop Brandon McDuff made a pair of groundball force-outs at second base.

Stars 17, Central Miss. 12.

Casey Griffith went 3-for-3 and scored three runs to lead the Vicksburg Stars. Colton Norris had three hits and scored twice while Dillon Green had two hits and two runs. The Stars will play Philadelphia tonight at 7 on Delta Field.

Florence 12, River Rats 3.

Garrett Hutchins had two hits for the River Rats in the loss. They play Central Mississippi tonight at 8:30 in an elimination game.
