Margaret Carpenter Allen.
PORT GIBSON – Margaret Carpenter Allen died July 26, 2006, at St. Dominic’s Hospital in Jackson. She was 88.
She was born Aug. 23, 1917, in Starkville. Her father, Ira Carpenter, was a professor of English at Mississippi State. Her mother, Etta Terry Carpenter, was a professor of mathematics. Her family moved to Port Gibson when she was 2, and she lived there for the rest of her life.
She attended Blue Mountain College and married Leigh Briscoe Allen Jr. on April 17, 1937. They farmed and reared two children in Port Gibson. When her daughter left for college, she took a job at the Mississippi Southern Bank, where she was a teller for 20 years before she retired.
She inherited her mother’s uncanny knack for numbers and involuntarily memorized the account numbers of all of her regular customers at the bank. She used that talent with numbers to dominate the local bridge and poker circuit, for which she was champion emeritus. She took special joy in teaching bridge to the younger ladies of Port Gibson.
She was also active in the Port Gibson Methodist Church Ladies, and she maintained her yard vigorously well up into her 80s.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her brother, Ira Carpenter Jr.
She is survived by her sister, Carolyn Schabel of Memphis; her son, Allen III of Jackson; her daughter, Margaret Palmer of Nashville; four grandchildren, Dorothy Hawkins of Jackson, Leigh B. Allen IV of Jackson, Stokes Palmer of Nashville and Elizabeth Palmer of New York City; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will be handled by Glenwood Funeral Home of Port Gibson. Visitation will be from 1 until 3 p.m. at the Port Gibson United Methodist Church with services at 3 p.m. Friday, followed by interment at Wintergreen Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be nephews: Joe Carpenter of Port Gibson, Bob Carpenter of Port Gibson, Andy Carpenter of Ocean Springs and Ted Schabel of Indianapolis, Ind.; and grandsons: Stokes Palmer of Nashville and Leigh B. Allen IV of Jackson.
Percy Benard Anderson.
UTICA – Mr. Percy Benard “Buck” Anderson, 75, died July 26, 2006, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. Visitation will be from 5-8 tonight at Glenwood Funeral Home, Utica. Services are 10 a.m. Friday, July 28, 2006, at Utica United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Williams, the Rev. Laurin Porter and the Rev. Malcolm Massey officiating. Burial will follow at Utica Cemetery.
Mr. Anderson was born June 19, 1931, in Dentville, Miss., Copiah County, to Edwin Ezekiel and Vera Strong Anderson. He graduated from high school at Copiah Lincoln Junior College in Wesson, Miss. He served two years in the United States Marine Corps with training at Parris Island, S.C. Percy had been a resident of Utica for over 45 years. He worked over 26 years for Desoto Furniture Manufacturing Plant until their furniture operations were closed in Jackson. He retired from Challenger Electrical Corp. in Jackson, Miss.
Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin Ezekiel and Vera Strong Anderson; sisters, Julia Anderson, Doris Barnett, Trixie Parrett; brother, Frank Anderson; and nephew, Billy Anderson.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joree Brown Anderson of Utica; son, Stephen Brown Anderson of Ridgeland; daughter, Sharron Lynn Anderson of Utica; brothers, Edwin Anderson and wife Elaine of Hazlehurst, Jimmy Anderson and wife Lois of Dentville, Billy Joe Anderson and wife Pam of Dentville; sisters-in-law, Margaret Anderson of Brandon, Bertie Mae Young and husband Robert of Utica; and brother-in-law, Jim Brown Jr. and wife Betty of Florence, S.C.; granddaughters, Laura Ashley Anderson of Utica and Jodie Michelle Anderson of Ridgeland; and special nieces and nephews.
Percy loved to fish and watch sports. He especially loved to watch Archie Manning and his sons play football.
The family would like to thank everyone for their many acts of kindness during Percy’s illness and since his death.
Pallbearers will be Paul Anderson, Mike Anderson, Lee Roy Anderson, Tim Parrett, William Walter and Jay Turnage.
Louis Shelby Jones.
Services for Louis Shelby Jones will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at W.H. Jefferson Home Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Jones died Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at his home. He was 47.
Mr. Jones was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira Jones Jr. and Beatrice Steward Jones; a brother, Stanley Jones; his maternal grandparents, Laura Mays and James Steward; and his paternal grandparents, Ira Jones Sr. and Lucille Grantham Jones.
He is survived by a son, Louis S. Jones Jr. of Natchez; a daughter, LaRissa Jones of Vicksburg; four brothers, Charles Tubbs Jr., Thomas Edward Tubbs and Ira Jones IV, all of Vicksburg, and Sgt. Joseph Powell Jones of the U.S. Army in Iraq; nine sisters, Linda White, Patricia London-Smith, Lavern Cosey-Gardner, Mary Miller Jones, Nina Beatrice Buchanan, Denice Jackson, Angela Brown, Riva Lanore Jones and Ledora Jones, all of Vicksburg; and nieces and nephews.
Juanita Perry Nations.
LORMAN – Juanita Perry Nations died Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at Natchez Regional Medical Center. She was 91.
Mrs. Nations was born in Hale County, Ala., and had been a Lorman resident since 1949. She retired from the National Plastic Plant in Port Gibson in 1980. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church of Natchez.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Faye Holmes of Natchez; and two nieces, Geraldine Clarke of Moss Point and Ethel Hyde of Huntsville, Ala.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Cane Ridge Cemetery in Lorman with the Rev. Adam Smith officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home of Port Gibson.
Lois K. Sullivan.
UNION CHURCH – Lois K. Sullivan died Saturday, July 22, 2006, at her home in Union Church. She was 59.
Born in Kentucky, Mrs. Sullivan was the first district election commissioner of Jefferson County for 13 years. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James D. Koen and Margie Nugent.
Survivors include a husband, Jerry Sullivan of Union Church; a sister, Lawanna Johnston of Grand Falls, Texas; a stepson, Timothy Ellis of Lubbock, Texas; and other relatives and friends.
Services will be at 5 p.m. Friday at Jefferson County Courthouse in Fayette with the Rev. Paul Southerland officiating. Burial will follow at Fayette Cemetery under the direction of Rollins Funeral Home in Fayette.
Active pallbearers will be friends of the family.
Clearance Benard Young.
EDWARDS – Clearance Benard Young died Wednesday, July 19, 2006, in Edwards, Miss. He was 88.
Born in Bovina, Mr. Young was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He was a member of Truway Holliness Church of Bolton, where he served as deacon.
He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Berry Sr.; his parents, Clarence and Elizabeth Young; two brothers, Johnny Young and Jerry Young; and two sisters, Lillie Walker and Annie Mae Gibson. He is survived by a sister, Aslean Ware of Muskegon, Mich.; four grandchildren; other relatives, including Bernice Ross of Chicago.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Living Word Baptist Church, 260 Mississippi 27 South. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill M.B. Church Cemetery under the direction of Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Saturday until the hour of the service at the church.
