On a sweltering summer evening, the Vicksburg Missy Gators played hot potato with the softball.
Vicksburg committed 10 errors, leading to 11 unearned runs for Warren Central and an easy 11-0 win for the Lady Vikes in the season opener for both teams Friday.
“We made way too many throwing errors,” first-year Vicksburg coach Laura Coulter said. “We’ve just got to work on the fundamentals a little more. As far as hitting, we did a pretty good job. We got some people on and moved them around.”
The poor fielding, though, doomed them.
Warren Central jumped to a quick 3-0 lead in the first with the help of two Missy Gator miscues, then blew the game open in the second when no Vicksburg glove was immune from disaster.
Vicksburg committed seven errors in the inning, by seven different players. WC’s Kaitlyn Patton sprinkled in a two-run single and Tiffany Fuller had a two-run double as the Lady Vikes scored six times and stretched the lead to 9-0.
WC finished the scoring in the fourth inning with the help of one final VHS error and RBI singles by Patton and Carlee Herman.
The first meeting of the season between VHS and WC was part of the River City Classic, a three-team round robin tournament that also included St. Aloysius. The Classic games are considered preseason contests and do not count toward a team’s overall record.
“That’s the intent of the classics, is to give the coaches a preview before the season actually begins. Hopefully it accomplished that for everybody,” Warren Central coach Lucy Young said.
WC 12, St. Aloysius 2.
St. Aloysius jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Warren Central answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning and never looked back.
Tiffany Fuller was 3-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored for WC, while Shawn Johnson was 2-for-3 with a home run. Emily Stewart knocked in both of St. Al’s runs.
St. Al 2, Vicksburg 1.
Carrie Hattaway and Sara Howington each had an RBI single in the first inning for St. Al, and the Lady Flashes made it stand up in a five-inning win over Vicksburg.
Catelyn Park went 2-for-2 and scored a run for St. Al, while Kiera Young had two hits and an RBI for Vicksburg.
