The Warren Central Vikings got plenty of practice with their scoring celebrations on Friday night.
In fact, more often than not, they got to do it twice in one drive.
The Vikings had three touchdowns negated by penalties in Friday’s 37-0 Red Carpet Bowl victory over Memphis-Kirby, and were flagged 14 times in all. The penalties totaled 122 yards and were one of the few problems WC had in an otherwise dominant performance.
“It was getting frustrating, but we worked through it,” Warren Central fullback Vic Tyrone said. “Some people were getting overexcited to get in and messing up.”
The Vikings’ violations ranged from normal early-season screwups like false starts and offsides calls, to more troubling personal fouls for unsportsmanlike conduct. WC was flagged for two of the latter, a 15-yard foul.
While the parade of penalties didn’t slow WC down – it still racked up 340 rushing yards and were in position to score on all but one drive, while the defense held Kirby to two first downs and 14 total yards – the flags did take some points off the board.
Illegal blocks negated a 50-yard fumble return by Sean Elliott in the second quarter and a 35-yard punt return by Ben Wau Caples in the fourth. Colin Carvey also had a 13-yard TD run wiped out by a holding penalty in the second period.
Keaton Sanders ended up tossing a 22-yard touchdown pass to John Hart after Carvey’s run. Eric Richards missed a 49-yard field goal after Elliott’s return, and the game ended with the Vikings inside the Kirby 5-yard line following Caples’ negated TD.
The ability of the Vikings to shake off the canceled touchdowns, along with their overall dominance, tempered head coach Curtis Brewer’s frustration a bit. WC’s defense held Kirby to two first downs and 14 total yards and the offense held the ball for more than 32 minutes.
“We’ve got to get a little better conditioned. We’ve got to polish things on offense,” Brewer said. “We’ve got a good bunch of kids. We’ve just got to learn to control ourselves.”
