Robert Lee Hearn Sr.
Robert Lee Hearn Sr. died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006, at his home. He was 67.
A lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Mr. Hearn was the son of the late Robert Excell and Evie Iona Powell Hearn. He attended Oak Ridge Elementary in Redwood.
He was a farmer and a member of Bradley Chapel United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, James Horace Hearn; a brother, George Hearn; and a son-in-law, James Boyd.
Survivors include his wife, Nell Farrar Hearn of Vicksburg; two sons, Robert Lee Hearn Jr. and William Michael Hearn, both of Vicksburg; one daughter, Jeanette Boyd of Vicksburg; a brother, James Howard Hearn of Vicksburg; two sisters, Doll Mathes and Nita Curtis, both of Vicksburg; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Fisher Funeral Home with Harry Hawkins, pastor of Bradley Chapel United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Slater Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Dean Hearn, Shan Woods, Bo McLeod, Billy Brent, Pete Wardlaw, Charles Thomas, Nelson Hearn and Douglas Hearn.
Honorary pallbearers will be nephews and Bobby Brown, Louis Worthy Sr., Marion Bufkin, Tom Wardlaw, Kelly Worthy, David McLeod and Earnest Hilderbrand.
Dean Lee McGee.
Dean Lee “Skeet” McGee died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, at River Region Medical Center. He was 42.
He is survived by his mother, Mattie Hall of Vicksburg; one son, Jonathan Lee Cole of Vicksburg; and a brother, Dennis Dewayne Hall of Vicksburg.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cool Spring M.B. Church with E.J. Crawford officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Rolling Fork.
A wake service will be from 6 until 7 p.m. Friday at Walker Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.
Omelia Miller.
Omelia “Aunt Duck” Miller died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006, at her home. She was 103.
Mrs. Miller was a retired domestic worker. She was a member of First Baptist church on Lane Street.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Miller; one son, Preston Kline; a sister, Dora Lee Russell; and her parents, Riley and Emma Russell.
She is survived by one sister, Sara Guines of Vicksburg; and grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives, including Estelle Davidson of Atlanta and Annie Honorable of Vicksburg.
W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
J.R. Olds.
ST. JOSEPH – J.R. “Shorty” Olds died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006, at Tensas Care and Rehab Center in Newellton. He was 78.
Born in Tioga, Texas, Mr. Olds served in the Army in the Korean War. Having lived in Tensas for most of his life, he worked as a Tensas Parish auxiliary deputy sheriff and volunteer fireman. He was a member of St. Joseph Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Zeno and Ethna Olds; and two brothers, S.Z. “Jack” Olds and L.C. “Dick” Olds.
He is survived by three daughters, Terri Merritt of St. Joseph, Ann Rayford of Alexandria and Jeana Tucker of Lafayette; a sister, Pauline Jiles of St. Joseph; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Baptist Church with the Revs. Kelly Barnett and Ron Flurry officiating. Burial will follow at Legion Cemetery in Newellton, La.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the church under the direction of Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home in Tallulah.
Pallbearers will be Carl Frank Olds, Alvis Randall, Sheriff Rickey Jones, Fire Chief Ricky Jones, Bob Stroud and John Hale.
Honorary pallbearers will be Christopher Merriett, Bobby Rayford, Jared Tucker, Wade Tucker and James “Jimbo” Finley.
Dr. Julia McAmis Todd.
PORT GIBSON – Dr. Julia McAmis Todd, 88, was born Aug. 5, 1918, and died Sept. 13, 2006. She was reared in the Beech Grove and Port Gibson communities of Claiborne County. She graduated from Clinton High School, Hillman College, Mississippi College and, along with her husband, earned a master’s and the Ph.D. degrees from Louisiana State University. She also attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, University of California at Los Angeles, University of Mississippi, University of Minnesota and several other universities for specialized courses.
Dr. Julia Todd was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Hollis Bailey Todd; her parents, Charles Aiken and Edna Lee Preskitt; and a brother.
She is survived by two grandsons, Hollis Nathaniel Myrick and Timothy Daniel Myrick II of Clinton; a nephew, Dr. Elton Lee McAmis of Oakland, Calif.; and her caretakers, J.R. Hudson and Andy Jones.
Dr. Todd taught at Ouachita Baptist University from January 1947 until August 1949, serving also as Baptist Student Union director for one year while there. She served on the faculty of Mississippi College from 1949 until her retirement in 1984.
Dr. Todd was the first officially appointed art and ceramics professor at Mississippi College. She used part of her inheritance from her father’s estate to purchase kilns and turntables for the Art Department. She directed the drama productions at the beginning of her work in the Communications Division. In 1955, she costumed the Louisiana Sesquicentennial Arcadian Project. In 1960, she costumed the pageant for the Baptist World Alliance in Toronto, Canada, and, in 1961, she costumed the centennial pageant for the Women’s Missionary Union in Houston, Texas. She served as president and chaired many committees for the Mississippi Speech Communication Association. She received the Order of the Golden Arrow Award from Mississippi College in 2003.
Along with her husband, Dr. Todd started the radio station at Mississippi College, FM 93.5, which has been recognized often as a leader in programming. From a long list of call letters submitted for the station, the FCC chose “WHJT,” which stands for Hollis and Julia Todd, the founders.
The Todds established two endowed scholarship funds at Mississippi College – the Hollis and Julia Todd Endowed Scholarship and the McAmis-Todd Endowed Scholarship – and, at Magnolia Speech School in Jackson, established the Drs. Hollis B. and Julia McAmis Todd “Chance for Tammy” Endowed Scholarship.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Glenwood Funeral Home in Port Gibson. The Rev. Cliff Nelson will be in charge of the service. He will be assisted by Dr. Andy Jones. Burial will be at Wintergreen Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the funeral home in Port Gibson from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.
Pallbearers will be Henry Bishop, Russ Brashear, Wayne Spencer, Earl Lloyd, Jeff Roberts and Jerry Trim.
Dr. Todd’s favorite charities were the scholarship funds established and Mississippi College in Clinton and Pattison Baptist Church, where her husband served as pastor for a number of years.
