OXFORD – Wake Forest came into this season with one of the more experienced teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
After Saturday night’s 27-3 beatdown of Ole Miss, a bowl game could be in the future for the Demon Deacons.
For Ole Miss, the debacle was nearly as bad as the weather which forced a 1 hour, 45-minute delay because of lightning.
Because of the rainy conditions at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, Wake Forest (4-0) employed a conservative attack. They threw just one pass in the first half and five for the game. It didn’t matter, the Rebels defense allowed the Deacons to hit the corners at an alarming rate.
Running back DeAngelo Bryant, who was making his first start after the loss of Wake’s previous starter to a knee injury, led the powerful Wake Forest ground game with 105 yards and one touchdown.
“I’m deeply disappointed,” Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron said. “We’re not getting better. We can’t run the football. They got 240 yards rushing to our 26.”
Quarterback Brent Schaeffer wasn’t much better. He completed just 13 of 28 passes for 127 yards. Former Hinds Community College quarterback Seth Adams led a late drive in the fourth quarter and finished 8-of-11 for 84 yards.
“Brent told me I did a good job,” Adams said. “It felt good to get out there.”
Orgeron said the offense, including Schaeffer must be more consistent.
“He was very inconsistent, but I thought Seth played well. But overall, we’ve got guys who played well in the first game but are not playing well now and we have got to find out why,” Orgeron said.
Leading 10-3 at the half, Wake Forest reasserted control of the game with a 12-play, 72-yard march that led to a 26-yard field goal by Sam Swank for a 13-3 lead.
After a three-and-out by the Rebels (1-3), Wake was on the move again, using one of just three pass completions in the game, a 28-yard flat pass to Rich Belton to set up Kevin Harris’ 4-yard run that made it 20-3 with 6:04 left in the quarter.
Schaeffer’s night was illustrated by a 43-yard interception return by Patrick Ghee that sealed Ole Miss’ defeat. The pick led to a 1-yard run by Mike Rinfrette that completed the scoring at 27-3 with 1:14 left in the third quarter.
