Pup needs a lift home to Pennsylvania|[9/28/06]

A cocker spaniel in Warren County, far from his home in Pennsylvania, needs a ride north.
The 6-year-old dog was owned by Richard Coppenhaven, 48, of Lebanon, Pa., and was found in his 18-wheeler after Coppenhaven was found dead of natural causes Sunday night.
Georgia Lynn, president of the Vicksburg Warren County Humane Society, said she was called by the 911 Dispatch Center and, in turn, sent humane society employee John Cochran to the scene.
Cochran, she said, was able to calm the dog enough to get it into a carrier and take it to the society’s shelter on U.S. 61 South.
Coppenhaven “had adopted the dog from an abusive owner when it was about a year old and it has severe separation anxiety,” Lynn said, adding the condition is common among animals rescued from abusive situations.
She said she called Coppenhaven’s sister, Karen Ristenbatt in Lebanon, with whom he lived when he was not on the road.
“She told me (Coppenhaven and the dog he had named Bandit) went everywhere together,” Lynn said. “She told me she wanted the dog back.”
That’s where the problem comes in – how to get Bandit nearly 1,000 miles from Vicksburg to eastern Pennsylvania.
Lynn said Ristenbatt told her Swanger Truck Co., for whom Coppenhaven drove, said it may have a truck coming through this area in a week or two.
“She asked me what it would cost to fly the dog home,” Lynn said. “I told her I thought it would cost $250, but she told me she could only afford $100.”
Delta Air Lines quoted a price of $174 to ship a dog in a medium-sized carrier kennel from Jackson to Harrisburg, Pa. The shipper has to supply the kennel.
“We need to get this dog back home,” Lynn said.
TO HELP BANDIT.
President Georgia Lynn said the Vicksburg Warren Humane Society will accept donations to ship Bandit home to Pennsylvania or send him along with someone who is driving. Anyone interested in helping may call the shelter at 601-636-6631.
