Homecoming: Banged-up Porters Chapel faces high-flying Glenbrook|[9/29/06]

Porters Chapel’s season has been like a seesaw – up one week, down the next, with a few cherry bombs thrown in.
The Eagles are 3-2, but haven’t won consecutive games yet this season. They’ll try to accomplish the feat again tonight when they host a solid Glenbrook team for homecoming.
“Carryover is what we’re looking to do week to week. Carry it over, and we should be able to win the ballgame,” said PCA quarterback Hayden Hales, who has thrown for 708 yards and six touchdowns this season.
PCA played perhaps its best game of the season in a 33-6 rout of Indianola Academy last Friday. Hales threw for 118 yards and ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns in the win, while the defense contributed another score and held Indianola in check.
The victory came at a price, though. Matt Hall, PCA’s best lineman on both offense and defense, suffered a knee injury in the second half and is out for the season. Four other starters will miss tonight’s game with various injuries, and coach Randy Wright said a number of others are banged up.
PCA started the season with a rotation of about 16 players. While transfers Cody Ferguson, Drew Henson and Patrick McVay have helped shore up a few spots, other player have been lost to injury as quickly as those three became eligible.
“The injuries have been unbelievable,” Wright said. “Dealing with injuries has been tough. We lost some quality players and didn’t have a lot of depth to begin with. Fortunately, we’ve had some kids step up and we’ve been able to pull out some wins.”
Getting another against Glenbrook (4-1) won’t be easy. The only blemish on the Apaches’ record was a 10-7 loss to defending MPSA Class A champion River Oaks in the third week of the season.
Glenbrook’s only other close call was a 21-14 win over Tensas Academy in the opener. In their other three games, the Apaches have outscored their opponents 127-12.
The game may have an added significance for Glenbrook, which is fighting for one of two playoff spots from District 8-A along with River Oaks and Claiborne. Two wild-card teams, selected via a power points system, will also make the playoffs.
Glenbrook must beat Claiborne to gain one of the automatic bids, or else take its chances with the other wild-card wannabes. A win over PCA – a Class AA team – would bolster its case for a wild-card bid if the need arises.
