A sigh of relief and some much-needed jubilation circulated through the Warren Central fieldhouse this week after a convincing 40-0 victory over much-improved Greenville-Weston.
WC coach Curtis Brewer had been trying to find the potion to pump excitement back into a team that had lost four straight games.
No potion, it turns out, is as good as a victory. And now the Vikings will try to take the emotion gained in the Delta into a crucial Region 2-5A showdown with Madison Central tonight at Viking Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
“When you have our record, every win is a big win. It was good to put a little air in our sails,” Brewer said of the Greenville victory. “… The offense moved the ball well and the defense and special teams played very well.”
Warren Central is tied with Madison, Greenville and Provine with 1-1 region records, and both trail Northwest Rankin and Clinton. A win over Madison Central, ranked No. 7 in the state by the Associated Press, will go a long way in securing a state-record 22nd straight playoff appearance.
But Brewer is well aware of Madison Central’s pedigree, and their coach Bobby Hall.
“They have a lot of warhorses,” Brewer said. “They have an outstanding quarterback, a big kid, that can run and throw when he needs to. They don’t throw much, but when they do, he is tall enough to see over the line.”
There is little question as to the Jags’ gameplan – run the football.
Don Smith leads the team with 747 yards rushing and eight touchdowns. Four Jaguars have rushed for more than 200 yards this season and the team is averaging nearly 300 yards rushing per game. Through six games, Madison has run the ball 272 times and passed 42 times.
Brewer said while Smith leads the team in yards, the offense begins with the quarterback, Jared Foster. He has run for 333 yards and four touchdowns.
“We’ve continued to improve since the beginning,” Hall said. “We’ve moved the ball well all year. We’ve just not put the ball in the end zone sometimes when we’ve got down there.”
Such has been the case for the Vikings. A 37-point showing in the opener and 40 points last week are 56 more than WC scored through the four-game skid.
Joel Forbes ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns in the Greenville win and will get the starting nod tonight.
Brewer said that tailback Michael Holt also will see time at running back, but he will be forced to play more defense because of Madison’s speed in the running game.
“I expect a real physical and tough football game,” Hall said. “They have a rich and storied tradition and they’re a very proud program. I just expect a great football game.”
