Carol E. “Boy” Flowers died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006, at Promise Specialty Hospital. He was 91.
A native and lifelong resident of Vicksburg, he was the son of the late Emanuel and Fannie Rollison Flowers. He retired from the Warren County Highway Department after 34 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Gladys Flowers.
He is survived by a daughter, Carolyn F. Irons of Vicksburg; one sister, Madie Smith of Vicksburg; four grandchildren, Donna Carpenter and Tiger Irons, both of Vicksburg, and Renee Hawkins and Caroline Thomas, both of Florence; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m Friday, Oct. 13, 2006, at Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Terry White officiating. Burial will follow at Redbone Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Darrell Thomas, Jeff Hawkins, Tommy Carpenter, Chris Irons, Scotty Rollison and Donnie Goodwin. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Irons, Tiger Irons, Ronnie Irons, Eric Carpenter, Austin Irons, Shelby Irons, Frank Wright and Alfred Rollison.

LONE TREE, Colo. – Steven C. Flowers died Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at his home in Lone Tree. He was 36.
Mr. Flowers was born in Vicksburg. He is survived by his mother, Nancy Flowers of Cocoa, Fla.; his grandmother, Jean Fawcett of Cocoa; two sisters, Lisa Cassel of Cocoa and Tami Cassel of Lafayette, Colo.; and a nephew, Dan Cassel of Cocoa.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brevard Memorial Funeral Home in Cocoa. Burial will follow at Brevard Memorial Park.
Sarah Tomlinson Gardner.
DOTHAN, Ala. – Sarah Tomlinson Gardner, widow of Harmon Austin Gardner Sr. and a former resident of Vicksburg from 1955 through 1998, passed away Oct. 10, 2006, in Dothan after a short illness. She was 93 years old.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 12, at First United Methodist Church, Dothan, with her pastor, the Rev. Sterling Boykin, officiating. Family visitation is one hour prior to the service in the church parlor. Graveside services at the Falkville, Ala., City Cemetery will be at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13.
A native of Falkville, where she spent her early years, she was the daughter of Arthur Hutcheson Tomlinson and Louisa Teague Tomlinson. After graduating from Falkville High School, she received a bachelor of arts degree in education from Athens College, Athens, Ala. She later completed a bachelor of science in home demonstration from Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Auburn, Ala., and did graduate studies in education at Mississippi State University and Mississippi College.
Prior to moving to Dothan, Mrs. Gardner lived 43 years in Vicksburg, where she taught third grade at Grove Street Elementary for 23 years. During her retirement years, she continued to be very active in her church and in many educational and genealogical organizations at the local, state and national levels. She was a charter member of the Wesley Methodist Protestant Church and served on many committees as well as chairman of the administrative board. She was active in Delta Kappa Gamma and the Mississippi Retired Teachers Association. Her love of family lineage and history led to her involvement with many genealogical, hereditary and historical societies, including Magna Carta Dames, Sons & Daughters of Pilgrims, Daughters of American Colonists, Colonial Dames XVII Century, Daughters of the American Revolution, Mississippi Genealogical Society and the Vicksburg Historical Society. Her primary focus for many years was the Colonial Dames XVII Century, where she served in many capacities, including National President General. She and Harmon were active in the Vicksburg Chrysanthemum Society and judged flower exhibitions in many areas of the United States.
Mrs. Gardner was preceded in death by her husband and parents, as well as her brothers, Wade Tomlinson and Robert Tomlinson; her sisters, Frances Haney and Elizabeth Mason; and a granddaughter, Julia Ann Blankenship.
She is survived by her children: Austin and Doris Gardner, Auburn; Mary Lee and Van Blankenship, Talladega, Ala.; and Arthur and Eileen Gardner, Dothan; and grandchildren: Marie and Bill McIntyre, Bossier City, La.; Lynn and Ed Putnam, Bogue Chitto, Miss.; Beth and Larry Bailey, Opelika, Ala.; Jim and Ann Gardner, Eufaula, Ala.; Mike and Laurel Gardner, Auburn; Buren and LuAnn Blankenship, Columbus, N.C.; Sally and Tim Smith, Talladega; Teddy and Angie Blankenship, Madison, Ala.; Alec and Lindsay Blankenship, Mobile, Ala.; Wright and Karen Gardner, Atlanta.; and Bert Gardner, Atlanta. Her surviving family includes a cousin, Harold Holmes of Falkville, along with 18 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons and nephews. The family asks that her memory be perpetuated through gifts to the Colonial Dames XVII Century Scholarship Fund, First United Methodist Church Building Fund or the charity of your choice.

GRACE – Services for Mary Leatha Knox, LaKidra Lamone Knox and Deliyah Watson, all of Grace, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at South Delta High School auditorium in Rolling Fork with the Rev. Frank Bailey officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Grace.
Mary Leatha Knox, her daughter LaKidra and her granddaughter Deliyah died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, in a car wreck in Issaquena County.
Mary Knox, 41, is survived by her husband, Freddie Knox of Grace; three sons, Jeremy Knox, Kishum Knox and Frederick Knox, all of Grace; five daughters, Tyangela Knox, Yolanda Knox, Natasha Knox and Kenyatta Knox, all of Grace, and Markeya Nealy of Jacksonville, Fla.; four brothers, Louis Peoples, Henry Peoples and Willie Peoples, all of Saginaw, Mich., and Robert Peoples of Greenville; one sister, Patricia Rash; and four grandchildren.
LaKidra, 12, was a seventh-grader at South Delta Middle School. She is survived by her father, Freddie Knox; and five sisters, Tyangela Knox, Yolanda Knox, Natasha Knox, Kenyatta Knox and Markeya Nealy.
Deliyah, 2, is survived by her parents, Yolanda Knox of Grace and Walter Watson of Anguilla.

JACKSON – Services for Mattie Burks Kelly will be at noon Saturday at Springridge Baptist Church in Utica. Burial will follow at Henry Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at Lakeover Memorial Funeral Home in Jackson.
Mrs. Kelly died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, at Select Specialty Hospital in Jackson. She was 93.
Mrs. Kelly was born in Learned to Buel and Narsis Burks. A longtime resident of Utica, she operated a farm with her husband in the Belmont community for a number of years. She had also worked in dietary services at Kuhn Memorial Hospital in Vicksburg and was a clerk at the F.L. Yates Store in Utica. She co-owned and operated Burks Grocery in Utica for more than 15 years.
She moved to Jackson in 2000 to live with her daughter.
She was a member of Springridge Baptist Church, where she was a church mother and served in other capacities.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Kelly; a daughter, Geneva Taylor; a son, Piney Taylor Sr.; and 11 siblings.
Survivors include four daughters, Mary Davis and Vivian Dorsey, both of Chicago, Helen Lenoir of Utica and Jean Diane Chamberlain of Jackson; one son, John Kelly of Gulfport; a sister, Rosie Lockett of Jackson; 17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Sally Frances Browne Lanz.
HOUSTON – Sally Frances Browne Lanz died Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at M.D. Anderson Cancer Research Hospital in Houston, Texas. She was 67.
Mrs. Lanz was the daughter of the late Charles Willis and Grace Huddleston Browne. A former resident of Vicksburg, she was a 1961 graduate of Mississippi University for Women. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Houston.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Charlie Lanz.
She is survived by her husband, Larry J. Lanz; and a daughter, Sarah Grace Lanz.
Services will be at 2 today at First United Methodist Church in Houston. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Glenwood Cemetery in Yazoo City.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at Stricklin-King Funeral Home in Yazoo City.

Melody Renea Worthy Nordstrom.
Services for Melody Renea Worthy Nordstrom were at 11 this morning at Fisher Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Terry White of Bowmar Baptist Church officiating. Burial followed at Worthy Cemetery.
Mrs. Nordstrom died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, at her home in Vicksburg. She was 50.
Mrs. Nordstrom was the daughter of the late Jessie George and Ellen Ruth Carson Worthy. She was a member of Wilderness Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Joe Davis.
She is survived by her husband, Andrew Nordstrom of Vicksburg; two sons, Clint Olin Truesdell and Michael Glen Truesdell, both of Vicksburg; a stepson, Clifton Nordstrom of Columbia, La.; her stepmother, Ruby Worthy of Vicksburg; a brother, Michael Craig Worthy of Pensacola, Fla.; a stepbrother, David Roberts of Vicksburg; a sister, Teresa Gregg of Vicksburg; three stepsisters, Sandy Luvell of Vicksburg, Donna Roberts and Judy Roberts, both of Monroe; and five grandchildren.
Kevin Otis.
Kevin Otis died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, at his home. He was 44.
As an assistant manager, Mr. Otis was employed with Volunteers of America at Shadow Cliff Apartments in Vicksburg. Having served 10 years in the U.S. Army, he was a former employee of the Warren County Courthouse, Warren County Justice Court and Ameristar Casino. He was a member of King David No. 1 M.B. Church.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Maggie Lee Fisher Otis; his biological mother, Ethel Sanders; and two brothers, George Wesley Otis and Kenneth Sanders.
He is survived by his wife, Valerie L. Otis of Jackson; a daughter, DeKayla Shelby of Vicksburg; his father, Richard Otis of Vicksburg; a stepmother, Bessie Otis of Vicksburg; a brother, Michael Callwood of Vicksburg; and other relatives, including Christopher Johnson, Shun Johnson and Mabel Peterson, all of Vicksburg.

Mr. Pierce died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, at River Region Medical Center. He was 92.
A retired barber, Mr. Pierce was a deacon at Greater Mount Lebanon M.B. Church. He was founder, leader and a 50-year member of the United Gospel Singers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Nellie Pierce; a brother, Robert Pierce Sr.; a sister, Carrie P. Walker; a son, Leon Pierce Jr.; and a granddaughter, Ernestine Martin.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Marie H. Pierce of Vicksburg; three sons, Billy Pierce of Oakland, Calif., Joseph G. Pierce of Vicksburg and Andrew Horton of Baton Rouge; eight daughters, Lee Theresa Lynn, Deloris P. Green, Martha Pierce-Robinson, Peggy Pierce and Vivian Pierce, all of Vicksburg, Carrie P. Anderson and Gertie P. Lea, both of Oakland, and Debra Pierce-Robinson of Ridgeland; one sister, Elizabeth P. Taylor of Oakland; 24 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including members of the Parker, Lewis and London families.

Services for James “Pete” Sadler will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery.

Mr. Sadler died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006, at his home. He was 59.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Artemease Ferguson and Jessie Buck.
He is survived by two daughters, Angela Harvey and Delia Harvey, both of Racine, Wis.; a son, James Harvey of Racine; five brothers, J.W. Sadler and Ervin Ferguson, both of Hampton, Va., John L. Sadler of Jackson, and Lee Arthur Sadler and Marcus Ferguson, both of Vicksburg; five sisters, Jerry Hawkins of Willowbrook, Ill., Charlene Allen, Lydia Ferguson and Shirley Ferguson, all of Vicksburg, and Louvinnia Sotomayor of Newport News, Va.; seven grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives, including members of the Pettis family.
Albert Clifton Solomon Jr.
Services for Albert Clifton “Sol” Solomon Jr. will be at 2 p.m. today at Glenwood Funeral Home with Dr. John G. McCall officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Solomon died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, at River Region Medical Center. He was 89.
Mr. Solomon was born in Lucedale and had lived in Vicksburg for 54 years. An Army veteran, he worked as a warehouse supervisor at U.S. Rubber Reclaiming. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Vicksburg.
He is survived by two sons, Dr. Don C. Solomon of Virginia Beach, Va., and Phil Solomon of Vicksburg; a daughter, Marti Solomon of Alabaster, Ala.; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Steven Solomon, Doug Wilson, Ken Harper, Mark Richter, Hugh Green and John Stout. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Heritage House Retirement Center.
Dora Stewart.
Dora Stewart died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006, at Promise Specialty Hospital. She was 92.
Mrs. Stewart was a homemaker and member of Pleasant Hill M.B. Church, where she served as a church mother and member of the Church Vineyard Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Stewart; her parents, Edward Gaskin and Henrietta Mitchell; three brothers, Joseph Gaskin, George Gaskin and Alfred Gaskin; and six sisters, Berlean Benard, Blanche Wilson, Elizabeth Winston, Arie Klein, Minnie Fisher and Alberta Turner.
She is survived by a brother, Edward Gaskin Jr. of Vicksburg; two sisters, Ernestine Boone and Willie Mae Singleton, both of Vicksburg; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives, including Christina Minor of Vicksburg and Josephine Guise of Flint, Mich.
