Vicksburg hopes to find the cure to 0-3 spot in the Region 2, Class 5A standings with tonight’s trip to Greenville-Weston.
The Gators (2-5) will seek to stop the three-game slide by beating the Hornets (3-4, 1-2) at Charles Kerg Field in Greenville.
VHS defensive coordinator Toriano Wells says there will be no letup in the Gators’ effort, coming off last week’s disappointing 19-7 to Northwest Rankin.
“Practice has been pretty upbeat and we look forward having an ultimate effort,” Wells said. “On defense we’re looking to create turnovers to stop our opponents’ offense.”
Getting turnovers has been difficult for the Gators this season. They had none last week but did manage to force three field goal attempts and managed two other stops on downs.
Greenville owns a region win over Murrah but they were blasted by Warren Central, 40-0, two weeks ago in Greenville.
That score, however, doesn’t mean much to Gator assistant coach Bobby Huell.
“Greenville has always played us tough. We’re not going to take them lightly.”
Still, Wells feels the Gators can continue to build on last week’s game against NWR which saw quarterback Stanton Price throw for a season high 235 yards on 17-of-34 passing. For the season, Price has completed 75 of 132 passes for 821 yards and six touchdowns.
“We saw some things of film we can exploit on offense,” Wells said.
Wide receivers Vernon Wolfe and John Qualls had big games against NWR. Wolfe caught four passes for 97 yards and a touchdown while Qualls was a force across the middle for five catches and 55 yards.
“We did a better job last week of hitting the receivers in the seams. We want to get it there again this week,” Huell said.
Wells said Greenville is running much of the same offense the Gators saw last year against Hazleshurst which makes sense because Greenville hired Willie Brown before the season began.
“It’s pretty much all the same stuff he (Brown) ran at Hazlehurst,” Wells said.
