GREENVILLE – Vicksburg High found a cure for what has been ailing its football team. The Gators turned Greenville-Weston mistakes on special teams into points in picking up their first Region 2-5A win of the season in a 45-12 romp Friday night at Charles Kerg Field.
Quarterback Stanton Price threw for 197 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more scores in directing Vicksburg’s biggest point outburst of the season.
“It felt good that we were able to change our momentum and get on a right track,” Price said of the Gators, who snapped a three-game losing streak inside the division to improve to 3-5. “We tried to establish our run game early and that made it easier to set up the pass.”
Price finished 13-of-21 for 197 yards. The two scoring tosses both went to Vernon Wolfe on 13 and 20 yard completions and extended a 31-12 lead into the 45-12 final.
“We want to carry this into next week,” Wolfe said. “The line gave Stanton time and we were really able to work the offense.”
No one was as relieved as VHS coach Alonzo Stevens.
“Nobody quit on this football team,” said an elated VHS coach Alonzo Stevens. “We finally got some bounces to go our way. I also take my hat off to my coaching staff. It’s one of the best there is in high school football.”
Thanks to Greenville’s shoddy deep snapping on punts, the Gators got 10 points less than six minutes deep into the game. Horace Allen and Dekores Branch tackled GW punter Chris Mills for a safety on the Hornets’ first possession. After the free kick, which was returned to the GW 26 by Marvin Bure, the Gators covered the distance in five plays capped by Delmon Robinson’s 2-yard TD run. Robinson also had the two-point run.
Greenville-Weston answered when Jadarius Atkins rambled 78 yards on a wing counter for the Hornets’ first score. The kick failed, leaving the score at 10-6 with 5:46 left in the first quarter.
Vicksburg came back with a pair of field goals by Michael Cooper of 41 and 36 yards that extended the lead to 16-6 with 10:14 left in the second quarter The second field goal was set up by a fumbled snap.
A second lost fumble, this time on another bad punt snap, gave VHS the ball on the GW 6 yard line. Price scored on second down from the two. Hugh Norfort ran in the two-point conversion for a 24-6 lead.
Price took to the air on the Gators’ last drive of the half, hitting 3 of 4 passes for 74 yards. The key play was a 29-yard completion to Les Lemons that bounced off a Hornet defender’s shoulder pad and into Lemons’ waiting grasp. The play set up Price’s 2-yard TD run. Cooper’s kick made it 31-6 with 3:27 left in the half.
Greenville-Weston (3-5, 1-3) scored on its first drive of the second half when Lavar Kingdon’s 40-yard punt return set up a 2-yard TD run by Darrington Sheppard.
Price answered for the Gators, leading a 61-yard march on 3-of-3 passing for 43 yards, capped by the 13-yard TD toss to Wolfe. Wolfe then got a two-point conversion pass from Robinson to make it 39-12 with 5:20 left in the third quarter.
The final score came with 3:26 left in the game when Price hit Wolfe on the 20-yard TD pass.
