Gators finding offensive groove in stretch run|[10/18/06]

After a second strong outing Friday night at Greenville-Weston, Stanton Price may have resolved the Vicksburg High quarterback situation.

The Gator junior completed 13 of 21 passes for 197 yards with two touchdowns and then added two first half rushing TDs off sneaks to pace Vicksburg to the 45-12 blow out win at Charles Kerg Field.

No one it seems was more relieved by the performance than VHS offensive coordinator Jackie Williamson.

&#8220I’m proud for our players,” said Williamson, who has taken a good amount of criticism for the Gators’ struggles in a 2-5 start, including an 0-3 hole in Region 2-5A.

&#8220As coaches, we can take the criticism. That was the offense we’ve been waiting on all season,” Williamson said of the 45-point output.

The Gators (3-5, 1-3) came in with a plan of establishing the run with Delmon Robinson lining up beside Price in the backfield. Robinson, who has played wingback and flanker, picked up 53 yards, all in the first half and scored the Gators’ first touchdown.

&#8220We wanted to try and establish a run game,” Price said as the Gators used a safety, Robinson’s 1-yard TD run, and two field goals by Michael Cooper to take a 16-6 lead early in the second quarter.

A second bad punt snap by Greenville helped extend the lead to 24-6 after a 1-yard sneak by Price and Hugh Norfort’s two-point conversion run.

With Greenville having to play the run, Price was able to find plenty of open spaces to work the ball downfield to his trip-set receiving corp of Vernon Wolfe, John Qualls and Les Lemons.

Lemons, who has shared time at quarterback with Price through the first six games, may have found a new home at split end.

Lemons turned a routine swing pass into a 28-yard gain and then came back two plays later by catching a richochet pass off a Greenville defender for a 29-yard gain. The play set up Price’s second TD run on a 2-yard sneak.

&#8220A lot of that was set up because our run game was better and Stanton staying patient in the pocket, letting the offense work itself out,” Williamson said.

When Greenville scored on its first drive of the second half, Price went back to the air, leading a pair of scoring drives that put the game away.

He was 3-for-3 for 43 yards on his third quarter march that was capped by a well-thrown, 13-yard corner route pass to Wolfe.

&#8220We’ve been trying that play for the last three or four weeks, but that was the first time we’ve run it in the endzone. It’s a pretty good route,” Price said.

Price then went back to Wolfe twice in the fourth quarter for a total of 58 yards, the latter going for a 20-yard TD pass.

Wolfe finished with five catches for 94 yards and two TDs. Lemons had four for 66 and Qualls had four for 37.

&#8220Now, we’ve got to come out and do it again next week,” Wolfe said about Friday’s home game against Madison Central.

At 1-3, the Gators essentially must win their final three games to have a chance at making the 5A playoffs.

&#8220This game was good for our momentum. We know we just have to go out and play,” VHS linebacker Dekores Branch said.
