A Vicksburg man was in critical condition this morning after being struck by a driver he had tried to confront and who then left the scene.

David Saldana, 24, 460 Still Drive, was hit about 3:25 Saturday morning on Cain Ridge Road near U.S. 61 South, said Sgt. Jeff Merritt of the Vicksburg Police Department.

Witnesses told police the incident began while Saldana was a passenger in a vehicle with two others turning onto Cain Ridge Road from Halls Ferry Road. At that point, their vehicle was approached from behind by a pickup with its lights flashing and horn honking. The pickup followed them the entire length of the residential road until it meets U.S. 61.

It was then, Merritt said, that Saldana got out of the car and attempted to make contact with the driver.

The pickup, which had passed Saldana, reversed its direction and struck him, Merritt said.

Police said they did not know why the driver of the pickup, described as a dark-colored, late-1980s or early-1990s Ford Ranger, was following Saldana and the others.

Saldana sustained head injuries and was airlifted to University Medical Center in Jackson, where he was reported in critical condition today.
