NATCHEZ – On most nights, Stevan Ridley’s 390 rushing yards would have been the most memorable thing about a football game.
This was not most nights.
Porters Chapel and Trinity combined for nearly 1,000 yards of offense in the game and three touchdowns in the last 2 1/2 minutes. Finally, a blocked extra point and a last-ditch drive allowed PCA (8-3) to escape with an incredible 42-41 victory over the top-ranked team in Academy-A and No. 7 overall.
“It was the most amazing high school football game I’ve ever seen,” PCA coach Randy Wright said.
Ridley, an LSU commitment, ran for 390 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. He also threw for 128 yards and two touchdowns, but was matched at every turn by PCA quarterback Hayden Hales.
Hales had almost 500 yards combined rushing and passing, and accounted for six TDs – four throwing and two rushing. He had three completions of 65 yards or longer, including a 65-yarder to Cole Smith that set up Hales’ 2-yard TD run on the next play.
The score, with less than a minute to play, tied the game at 41. The extra point was initially blocked, but an offsides penalty gave PCA kicker Michael Busby a second opportunity, which he easily converted to put the Eagles ahead 42-41.
“There were a lot of big plays in the game, but they made the one that mattered the most,” Trinity coach David King said. “I don’t want to take anything away from their team, but this game was lost on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.”
Ultimately it was a blocked extra point by Cody Ferguson on Trinity’s go-ahead touchdown with 1:29 to play that cost the Saints the game. On the play, Ridley connected with Wells Middleton on a 46-yard touchdown pass to put the Saints ahead 41-35.
After Hales’ touchdown put PCA ahead again, the Saints got the ball back and moved to their own 41 with 7 seconds left. Ridley threw a hail mary pass to Middleton, but the ball was batted down by PCA defender Matt Cranfield.
The win sends PCA into the Academy-AA playoffs on a thrilling note. The Eagles will travel to Baton Rouge to face Central Private – which routed PCA 29-0 in the second week of the season. Kickoff Friday is 7 p.m.
