Two of Warren County’s best baseball players officially signed to play Division I college baseball next season.
Porters Chapel Academy’s Michael Busby signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Mississippi State, while Vicksburg High’s Tyler Wells signed to play at Ole Miss.
Both had given verbal commitments to their respective schools, but Wednesday was the first day they could officially sign scholarship papers.
“I think I have a good chance to compete for a starting position because I’m real competitive,” Wells said. “I’m going to give it 100 percent.”
The two played on the same Culkin Critters youth baseball team and began their high school careers at Porters Chapel. Wells transferred to Vicksburg as a sophomore.
Busby led the Eagles’ charge to an MPSA Class A title last season. He hit .504 with 14 doubles, 41 RBIs and 59 hits. He also scored 52 runs and had 20 stolen bases.
An arm injury in his sophomore year limited his pitching as a junior. He did pitch 30 2/3 innings, had a 0.88 ERA and struck out 67.
Busby, who plays shortstop at PCA when not pitching, said he likely would be a position player for Ron Polk’s Bulldogs.
“I don’t know where I will play. I will do my best to help the team out any way I can,” Busby said.
The options for Wells at Ole Miss will be wide. He played five positions for the Gators as a junior, including catcher, second and third base, and outfield. He had a .417 batting average a team-high 28 RBIs.
Wells will join former VHS teammate Jordan Henry in Oxford next season and continue a tradition of Division I players from Warren County.
Thirteeen players from Warren County schools, including Busby and Wells, have signed to play Division I baseball in the last 10 years.
“We’ve had a line of players go in that direction to Ole Miss,” VHS coach Jamie Creel said. “And a player like Tyler brings a lot to the table. He is the best defensive player I’ve had and pound-for-pound, the most powerful. He’s the total package with his hitting and his arm strength.”
