Sha’Kayla Caples had her usual big game Monday night leading Warren Central to a 56-44 victory over Wingfield, the Lady Vikes’ third straight victory.

Caples, a sophomore and reigning Vicksburg Post Player of the Year, scored 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as Warren Central built a big lead, watched the Lady Falcons make a comeback and then ran a delay offense to perfection in the closing minutes.

&#8220We had a big lead and let them get back in it a little,” Warren Central coach Donny Fuller said. &#8220I thought we did a really good job of regaining our composure and stretching the lead back to 12 or so.”

Caples connected on 10 of 15 shots and Brittany Willis added 13 points for the Lady Vikes, who will be in action again tonight at home against Crystal Springs.

Lorean Shoulder led Wingfield with 22 points and eight rebounds, but for most of the night, she was the only offense for the Jackson school. Two Lady Falcons had eight points each.

Warren Central, which had already beaten Wingfield in the Vicksburg Warren Classic earlier in the year, concentrated defensively on Shoulder. She missed her first six shots as the Lady Vikes ran to a 12-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. After the scoreless first quarter, Shoulder hit 9 of her last 10 shots and led a Wingfield comeback from a 30-16 halftime deficit.

Warren Central held a 42-26 lead with 3 minutes, 21 seconds to play in the third quarter and watched as Wingfield cut the deficit to as few as 10 points.

The Lady Falcons further cut into the deficit, getting it down to six midway through the fourth quarter.

Caples completed a three-point to give WC a 50-43 lead with four minutes left and the Lady Vikes scored six of the last seven points in the fourth. WC began running a delay offense with a little under three minutes to play without any pressure or fouls from the Lady Falcons.

WC increased the lead to 54-43 with about a minute to play and Wingfield did not foul until there were six seconds remaining in the game.

&#8220The amazing thing is that they didn’t foul until six seconds to play and by that time, it was too late,” Fuller said.

Warren Central entered Monday night’s game with a decided height advantage and it cost the Vikings down the stretch.

Maurice Bolden scored 21 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had nine blocks to lead the Falcons to a blowout in a game that was close at the half.

Timothy Kendrick scored 17 points and Jermaine Moffett netted 15 for the Falcons.

Shone Ester scored a team-high 20 points and Mario Luckett, the tallest WC player at 6-feet, 5-inches, had 15 points and nine rebounds. Luckett, though, fouled out one minute into the fourth quarter and Wingfield scored and rebounded at will.

Wingfield led 36-32 at the half and extended the lead to 56-43 entering the fourth quarter. A 24-point outburst – nine coming from Moffett – highlighted a fourth quarter that saw WC turn the ball over 11 times.

Moffett also had 13 rebounds and six blocks.

Warren Central has lost two of its last three games since winning the championship of the Vicksburg Warren Classic.
