UTICA – A Vicksburg man was killed Tuesday when the sport utility vehicle he was driving north on Mississippi 27 collided head-on with a southbound 18-wheeler.
Richard Cryer, 31, address unavailable, died when the GMC Suburban hit a Peterbilt 18-wheeler driven by Michael Fuller, 46, of Monticello, said Sgt. James Walker of the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
The Suburban had a Warren County license tag, but its ownership could not be confirmed.
Fuller was taken to River Region Medical Center, where he was treated and released, a hospital spokesman said.
Cryer and Fuller were the only occupants of their vehicles, said Trooper Maurice Kennedy of the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
The wreck happened near Cannada Cross Road in northwestern Hinds County, less than three miles southeast of the Big Black River, on the windy and hilly two-lane highway that connects Interstates 20 and 55.
Tire marks in the southbound lane could be seen beginning about 40 yards north of where the 18-wheeler came to rest, partially off the highway to the right.
The Suburban, which was heavily damaged, came to rest in a ditch on the east side of the highway.
Cryer was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:10 p.m., Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart said. Arrangements were to be handled by a Louisiana funeral home.
A determination of the cause of the wreck had not been made this morning, Grisham-Stewart added.
Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said the wreck was reported by two deputies, Ruby Hunter and Edmond Gibbs, who were returning to Vicksburg from Columbia Training School in Marion County.
E-911 dispatch center received the wreck report at 4:02 p.m., records show.
Warren County deputies helped Fuller until troopers arrived, Pace added.
