Two high powered offenses will meet to decide the MPSA Class-A state championship Thursday afternoon at Mississippi College’s Robinson-Hale Stadium in Clinton.

On one side is Briarfield Academy (11-2), a team that has averaged 35 points in three playoff victories in reaching the MPSA finals for the first time. Briarfield was a three-time champion in the now defunct Louisiana Independent School Association (LISA).

On the other side is Trinity Episcopal School of Natchez (11-2), which is led by LSU committment Stevan Ridley. The Saints have won two MPSA titles with the last coming in 2001 when they beat Wayne Academy.

Briarfield coach Lance Prine knows his team will have its hands full in trying to stop Ridley, even with the Trinity back’s status being a question mark. Ridley hurt his ankle in the third quarter of last Friday’s 37-7 win over River Oaks for the South State title.

&#8220He’s going to play,” Prine said Tuesday. &#8220I’ve talked with their coaches. He may not be 100 percent, but even at 90 percent concerns me. He could be in the stands and he’d be a concern. He is a very outstanding player.”

Ridley is a threat both as a tailback and at quarterback. He has rushed for 2,340 yards and 27 touchdowns while passing for 436 yards and seven scores.

In the playoffs, Ridley has averaged more than 130 yards rushing in three games. He had 165 through 2 1/2 quarters against River Oaks. Freshman R.J. Fleming picked up the slack, rushing for 115 yards and three touchdowns as the Saints completed the rout against the defending Academy-A champions from Monroe.

&#8220They’re just a tough team. They’ve got a bunch of seniors, I think 12 or so, and a good group of juniors,” Prine said.

Trinity coach David King, who led the Saints to the 2001 title, says his team’s strength has been its senior leadership.

&#8220We have 12 seniors, which is the most I’ve had, and they want to make history,” King said.

Briarfield will pin its hopes behind a spread offense led by senior quarterback Jamie Fortenberry. Fortenberry accounted for all five touchdowns in last week’s 33-21 win over Benton in the North State final at Lake Providence.

For the season, he has completed 68 of 115 passes for 1,138 yards and 17 touchdowns. He has rushed for 763 yards and 16 scores, including three last week.

Trinity had its problems against a spread offense back in the regular season finale when Porters Chapel quarterback Hayden Hales passed for 329 yards and ran for another 170 in leading the Eagles to a wild 42-41 win in Natchez.
