It was a long cold night for the St. Aloysius boys soccer team and a pretty hot one for St. Frederick’s Justin Mailres.
The visiting Monroe, La., Catholic school pounded the Flashes 9-1 Friday night behind five goals from Mailres at Balzli Field. St. Frederick, a Louisiana, Class 1A quarterfinalist last season, improved to 6-1.
“Tonight was his breakout game,” St. Frederick coach Tim Judd said of Mailres. “Normally, he gets a lot of assists.
“All I know, is that they were a strong bunch,” said St. Al coach Jason Hopkins. “I had no idea how good they were. They were the best team we’ve seen. You could tell they were pretty experienced while we’re pretty mixed with eighth graders and a couple of seniors.”
St. Al (3-3) will be able to put this nightmarish game behind them because they are back on the pitch this afternoon against Ouachita Parish, another Monroe team.
The Flashes played St. Frederick pretty evenly for the first 10 minutes. They had a couple of early opportunities, including a shot by Bray Jones that went wide.
St. Frederick’s Michael Fontenot broke the scoreless tie at the 10 minute mark, sending a shot past St. Al keeper Matt Thornton.
St. Frederick sweeper Joey Terracina stopped Stephen Mazzanti’s shot at a tie two minutes later.
After three straight saves by Thornton, Mailres scored the first of his five goals at the 18:38 mark with a shot from the top of the box. He came back with a 25-yarder less than two minutes later for a 3-0 lead.
Molte Schick made it 4-0 at the 25:11 mark and Mailres got his third goal in the 39th minute for a 5-0 lead.
Jase Ebersole went to keeper for St. Al in the second half and kept the Warriors at bay until Nathan Cantrell scored in the 51st minute.
St. Al got its lone goal when Mazzanti powered in a shot from 30 yards out in the 58th minute.
St. Al was outshot 24-5. Thornton and Ebersole combined for nine saves. Fontenot finished with three assists to go with his two goals for St. Frederick.
(G) St. Al 1, St. Frederick 0.
In the 62nd minute of a scoreless game, Taylor George blasted in the game’s only goal off an assist from Haley Davis.
St. Al (4-4-1) then survived a penalty kick when Payton Tonore pushed her 10-yarder wide of the goal.
(G) Vicksburg 6, BR-St. Joe 0.
The Missy Gators (7-2-1) routed St. Joseph Catholic out of Baton Rouge.
Scoring goals for VHS were Diari Gilliam, Jill Rush, Becky Wilson, Crystal Davidson, Lexie Foster and Holly Head. Head also had two assists while Lucy Matthews and Gilliam had one each.
(G) Sacred Heart 3, WC 1.
Mary Clare Scurria scored a goal for Warren Central, but the Lady Vikes (7-3) fell to Sacred Heart of New Orleans in the Ridgeland tournament.
